PRÉFACE Si l'on croit nécessaire de connaître la méthode générale qui a guidé l'auteur dans cette seconde série de Masques, on se reportera aux pages placées en tête du premier tome. Goethe pensait: Quand on ne parle pas des choses avec une partialité pleine d'amour, ce qu'on dit ne vaut pas la peine d'être rapporté. C'est peut-être aller loin. La critique négative est nécessaire; il n'y a pas dans la mémoire des hommes assez de socles pour toutes les effigies: il faut donc parfois briser et jeter à la fonte quelques bronzes injustes et trop insolents. Mais c'est là une besogne crépusculaire; on ne doit pas convier la foule aux exécutions. Quand nous l'appellerons, ce sera pour qu'elle participe à une fête de gloire. Certains critiques ont toujours l'air de juges qui, leur sentence rendue, attendent le bourreau. Ah! voici le bourreau! Nous allons faire un feu de joie et danser autour des cendres de nos amours! Il n'y a plus besoin de bûchers pour les mauvais livres; les flammes de la cheminée suffisent. Les pages qui suivent ne sont pas de critique, mais d'analyse psychologique ou littéraire. Nous n'avons plus de principes et il n'y a plus de modèles; un écrivain crée son esthétique en créant son oeuvre: nous en sommes réduits a faire appel à la sensation bien plus qu'au jugement. En littérature, comme en tout, il faut que cesse le règne des mots abstraits. Une oeuvre d'art n'existe que par l'émotion qu'elle nous donne; il suffira de déterminer et de caractériser la nature de cette émotion; cela ira de la métaphysique à la sensualité, de l'idée pure au plaisir physique.

Au fait, cela veut peut-être dire que c'est là un spectacle rare, et qu'il ne nous sera jamais donné de les contempler. Et bien sagement les petits innocents répondent: l'un, qu'elles sont noires; l'autre, qu'elles sont blondes; les autres les trouvent brunes, blanches, grises, rousses. Est-ce mensonge ? Non. Défaut d'observation seulement. Cet instituteur a voulu prouver le peu de valeur du témoignage des enfants appelés en justice. Par cette expérience et dix autres, il a très bien réussi..."
