My late wife was a teacher for over thirty years mostly in high school. During that time she saw many cases of both hyperactive and non hyperactive ADD in students and often was able to work with parents to help them address these issues. Over the years I assisted her in both studying the issue and exploring options. There is so much misunderstanding of this issue that in this short book I hope to present a case study and some references that will hopefully assist others faced with this issue. Let me make clear, I am not a medical doctor nor otherwise trained to deal with these issues. But I am a parent and grandparent and was the husband of a wonderful and caring teacher whose work in this area I hope to continue. If this small book helps only one person it will have been worth the effort.

This book includes a parent's guide to creating your own personal family elf and the signal it will give your children when it is time for bed on Christmas Eve. It is a story book and a coloring book too! This concept was used by the author's parents when he was young --- long, long ago! Santa's Secret brings the concept into the modern age including an Apple iPad application parents can use to set their own bed time alarm from 5 minutes to 40 minutes. When the alarm sounds lights on the tree and mantle flash and Santa gives a Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas greeting and the fireplace blazes. All children -- time to be in bed! (Later signal for parents of course!). And children will run happily off to bed to dream of sugar plums and presents! And parents can relax and enjoy the rest of their evening before the big day!

With the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I in August 2014 it is a good time to reflect on this first great world war whose scars led to an even greater conflagration in World War II. Nearly 100 years after his death the author discovered his grandfather's last letter to his wife only 9 days before he was killed in action leading his infantry company through the Meuse Argonne forest shortly before the end of the war. One of the most highly decorated soldiers of the war - with two silver stars - his letter is not so personal that it cannot be shared. For the author and hopefully others it will give a glimpse into what it was like to serve in that war. It is also hoped that it will encourage readers to learn more about World War I and its continuing influence on world affairs.
There are many war stories told of the long years of World War II. These are stories of heroism, tyranny, atrocities, pain, courage and those of human endurance, pride and survival. In Orphan of Infamy, Robert Scott explores these factors as they apply to a small village in (then) Czechoslovakia. The trials of the Czech villagers began in 1938 when they were caught between the pincers of the great powers. Abandoned by their allies, they found themselves pawns in the great game of conquest launched by Nazi Germany in its quest for empire. Join Robert as he relays the events that took place in the village of LIdice and the massacre of its people. This is a story of hardship and a story of triumph. It is a story of resistance to tyranny and the cost of freedom, and the story of a child who survives the massacre and the search for her mother who might have survived the butchery of Ravensbruck. Robert Scott served briefly in the Canadian Army and worked later for major industry as publications manager. He earned graduate degrees in English and History and held the position of Professor of Rhetoric and Technical Communication for twenty-five years. He held teaching positions in Canada, the Czech Republic and Singapore. He and his wife, Vicki, live in Sechelt, British Columbia.

What gives poetry its effect? Perhaps it is its foreignness to day to day living --- something apart from the travail of reality. Perhaps it is that poetry springs as much from the heart as from the mind. Whatever the reason, in poetry certain aspects of life and living gain a clarity and meaning not found in prose writing. In his work the "Apology" Plato attributes to Socrates the statement that "...the unexamined life is not worth living..." This small book of poetry tries to examine some of those aspects of life that makes it worth living.
Dan Cooper and his family have gone through the heartbreaking experience of having had to put their dog down and they look for comfort from the ordeal only to be met with one tragedy after another. Not only does their pet die, but in addition, tragedy continues to follow them. "The Rainbow Bridge ... Your Pet: When It's Time to Let Go," chronicles the life of Dan Cooper, the death of his dog, his marriage, birth of their son, another family pet that must be put down, as the story weaves between fact and fiction. Bound to appeal to pet lovers, some perfect markets for this "quick, easy read" include pet stores, veterinary offices, pet grooming businesses, ASPCA offices, animal rights activists, as well as bookstores. It's a learning experience based on real-life mixed with an interesting fiction story line. The book spans the period from 1964-2005 and has an extremely positive ending based on "The Rainbow Bridge," a poem by an unknown author. The story is suitable for a Christian market written without the need for X-rated content. Dan, employed in display advertising at a local newspaper, is engaged to marry Cathy, who works in the photo processing department of the same newspaper. Before the wedding goes off without a hitch and they move into their first home in Venice, FL., Dan loses his dog, Cosmo who is fatally injured by a passing motorist. As the story progresses, Dan and his wife have a son, who, at age 6 "demands" to get a dog, a "wire haired fox terrier, just like I saw on TV." Of course the loving parents accommodate him and it becomes love at first sight for the entire family. Years later, tragedy strikes as "Foxy Lady" develops kidney failure. Real-life events based on the author's own are detailed as Foxy Lady's condition deteriorates and an eventual determination must be made to have her put down after months of unsuccessful treatment. It's a sad, heartbreaking story, yet all the heartaches lead to an extremely positive inspiring, poignant and heartwarming ending that sensitive pet owners are sure to love. If you enjoyed "Marley and Me" or "A Dog Year," this may be a perfect read for you.

None of us wants to do this. None of us wants to think about our passing and perhaps even more becoming incapacitated before our death leaving a burden on those we love. That is why wills are put off, powers of attorney are put off and even making a living will and medical directive that will ease the burden of those who have to deal with problems we have not anticipated. This is not a book only for those in retirement or who have just been diagnosed with a serious illness. It is for anyone of any age who has loved ones and has affairs that they will have to handle on your incapacitation or passing. There is little you can do to show your love more than to anticipate and help them to survive without you. This book may be helpful even if a manual is not prepared as it will cover subjects to think about and if you are someone charged with taking care of affairs of a friend or family member it may also help you to start a checklist of things you need to consider. Of course that is a whole lot easier if there is a manual to help direct you in your search and in performing your duties.
I brace myself to cross the bridgeoutreaching from the rocky ridgeon which I pause, as though in plight, perhaps impaired by fear or flight.Should I proceed with strong resolve, not knowing what that may involve;but blessings to all left behindand may this way to all be kind? But is this structure safe and soundto take me on to firmer ground,or will it sag beneath my weight,or sway to send me to my fate?Robert Scott has previously won many prizes in poem competitions and also written a successful book of poems published in England. This book records his reflections as they occurred.
