From nursery rhymes, to advertising, to most forms of popular music, both children and adults like rhyme. Sadly, modern poetry has generally eschewed rhyme in favor of free-verse. Robert Frost once remarked that "free-verse is like playing tennis with the net down." I would add that today it's also playing tennis on an unmarked court. In the academic world, the "prose poem" is in, and the traditional rhymed poem is out. My book runs counter to this aspect of modernity. Yet, admittedly, a few of my poems below are cinquains, which is a form of poetry with 22 syllables in 5 lines (2-4-6-8-2). The lines may or may not rhyme. I hope that this book of 89 diverse poems from various perspectives will entertain and at least occasionally instruct the reader. Some have been published in such varied journals as Westward Quarterly, Big Pulp, Soul Fountain, Poet's Digest, and The American Dissident.

My purpose in writing this book is to provide some amusement and insight regarding the American political process, especially in a presidential year. Because American politics is often characterized by insincere and foolish talk, journalist H.L. Mencken once termed it a "carnival of bunkum," and 2016 proved to be no exception. If fact, this year the politicians went overboard when it comes to claptrap because it was also a year of grotesque, repellant sideshows, and I believe that the limerick is the perfect vehicle of satire for this kind of behavior. My limericks are not politically correct, but there is nothing in them that is racist, sexist, or homophobic. They were written in chronological order, starting in mid-December 2015 and ending in mid-November 2016. And I thought the number 538 was appropriate because that's the number of electoral votes.

"The Decameron" is surely one of the greatest achievements in the history of literature. At least three of Shakespeare's plays were directly influenced by stories in "The Decameron." This classic is read, discussed and appreciated in the university classroom but not so much anywhere else. Mark Twain once remarked that "a classic is book that people praise but don't read." Twain is suggesting that such books are often too long and thus perhaps too boring for the average reader. Not counting the introductory notes, "The Decameron" has nearly 800 pages. My book is for the average reader. It has just a little over 100 pages, and I have adapted and interpreted each of Boccaccio's stories in rhyme from eight to twenty lines with the hope that it will add to the appeal of the average reader, and that he will therefore be encouraged to read the entire work. Boccaccio did not title his tales, so I took the liberty of doing so. My source was "Giovanni Boccaccio's "The Decameron," A Signet Classic, trans. Peter Bondanella & Mark Musa, New York, 1982.

A Natural History of Oregon's Lake Abert in the Northwest Great Basin Landscape focuses on a salt lake and includes descriptions and numerous photos of the region's geology, hydrology, and plants and animals--from lichens to pronghorn sheep--as well as its archaeology. Because birds are so conspicuous, both on the lake and in the uplands, there is an abundant amount of information including about them.

Larson IS student success. ELEMENTARY AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: ALGEBRA WITHIN REACH owes its success to the hallmark features for which the Larson team is known: learning by example, a straightforward and accessible writing style, emphasis on visualization through the use of graphs to reinforce algebraic and numeric solutions and to interpret data, and comprehensive exercise sets. These pedagogical features are carefully coordinated to ensure that students are better able to make connections between mathematical concepts and understand the content. With a bright, appealing design, the new Sixth Edition builds on the Larson tradition of guided learning by incorporating a comprehensive range of student success materials to help develop students' proficiency and conceptual understanding of algebra. The text also continues coverage and integration of geometry in examples and exercises.
