Meatloaf and burgers are an all time family dinner favorite. Families have been serving meatloaf and burgers for decades. Meatloaf is the one dinner either you love or hate. We've all had great meatloaves and also not so great meatloaves. If you enjoy meatloaf, you might want to make two for leftovers. I have included several recipes using leftover meatloaf. Hamburgers and beef sandwiches are a staple in my house. Included are numerous recipes for burgers, hearty steak or ground beef sandwiches along with several sloppy joe recipes. There is nothing better than a juicy steak. Included are many recipes for steaks using seasonings and marinades.Hearty beef main dishes are a staple in my house. I usually make a lasagna or meat pie for busy weekends. They are easy to reheat and everyone can eat when ready. Skillet meals, hearty beef salads and casseroles are my favorite go to weeknight dinner. Skillet meal and casserole recipes often a wide variety of taste for everyone to enjoy. I keep main dish salads prepared in the refrigerator. We eat salad as a main meal at least 5 times a week if not everyday. Main dish salads are a great way to get your family to eat vegetables but also include the beef they love.
Fruit desserts are one of our favorite desserts. We love pies, cobblers, crisp, cakes and more made with fruit. I have included a wide variety of desserts using fresh, frozen and canned fruits. All your favorite fruit cobblers, fried pies, turnovers, dumplings, cakes and pies are included. I have also included desserts and trifles made from your favorite fresh or canned fruits.A fresh fruit pie baking in the oven means home to me. My mother would bake fresh pies quite often. I still see the joy on her face when we devoured her pies. Fresh fruit pies have a smell and taste that compares to no other pie. I have included all my mother's favorite recipes for fruit pies and tarts. Being from the south, fried pies and fruit dumplings are a mainstay for fresh, frozen or canned fruits. Fried pies are a southern staple and are made from all kinds of fruit. Cakes are one of the premier desserts. There is nothing more delicious than a beautiful cake on your dessert table. Layer cakes, bundt cakes and sheet cakes are all included in the recipes.
Sunday dinners in the south were a tradition in my home growing up. Sunday was about God and family. Sunday was my favorite day of the week. The family would gather for a meal after church and spend the afternoon together. Some meals were elaborate and some were very simple. It was not only about the food but about enjoying each other. Times were much simpler then and I recall fondly all the memories. Enjoy this journey with me as we travel along memory lane to remember Sundays in the South.The food was delicious and plenty. I lived in a rural farm community and neighbors would always drop by on Sunday afternoon. My mother was the best southern cook I have ever known. She enjoyed watching family and friends eat the food she made. I always said God put my mother on this earth to bring joy to people. Whether it was her calm and gentle demeanor or the plates of food she served, she did it with joy. You could not help but be happy around my mother. If you were having a bad day, she always knew the right thing to say and the right food to cheer you up. She brought great joy to everyone she met.Mother would do most of the cooking on Saturday so she could spend time with family and friends on Sunday. There were almost always at least 1 cake and pie or cobbler for every dinner. She also made cookies, homemade ice cream and various other desserts. I come from a large family and we might have 40 people at Sunday dinner. If you missed Sunday dinner, you better have a great reason. She expected everyone to attend Sunday dinner.When we became adults and moved out, we would drop by on Saturday's to help her prepare for Sunday dinner. Sunday dinners started out at my grandparent's house but as they got older, my mother took over the tradition. As my mother got older, we all pitched in to continue the tradition. Times have changed. My mother passed and most of the family has moved away. I still prepare Sunday dinner even though it may only be a few of us now. I still have all the fond memories of growing up with Sunday dinners in the south.
Turkey is an integral part of holiday meals but turkey is for everyday. Included are recipes using roast turkey and ground turkey. I have included recipes for main dishes, homestyle savory pies, casseroles, soups, salads and sandwiches. Turkey is affordable and much lower in fat and calories than red meat. When recipes call for ground turkey, use ground turkey breast for less fat. It is so easy to grind turkey to make your own ground turkey. When turkeys are on sale at the holidays, I buy several to make ground turkey. Cut the turkey into manageable pieces and debone the turkey with a sharp knife. Grind the turkey in a food grinder or food processor. I package the ground turkey in 1 lb. increments and freeze up to 4 months in a heavy duty Ziploc bag.
In the south, sausage and ham are well loved. These flavorful meats show up at numerous meals and occasions. Ham is always on the table for holidays and leftovers are just as delicious. Ham and fully cooked sausages are a budget friendly and quick solution for dinner. Sausage or ham appetizers are served at parties, dinners and potlucks. Sausage or ham soups, sandwiches and casseroles are a delicious and easy way to get a meal on the table quickly. Sausage is not just for breakfast. In the south, chorizo, smoked sausage and pork sausage are the most popular. Italian sausage also has a special place on our table. The recipes in this cookbook use ingredients readily found at the grocery store. The dishes are delicious and use ingredients you probably have in your pantry or freezer. I have included our family favorite homemade sausage recipes along with numerous recipes for meals and casseroles.

Hearty yeast rolls filled with savory meats and toppings are perfect for any meal. Hot biscuits and cornbread are a southern tradition and are well honored in my house. The Instant Pot is all the craze but foods just taste better slow cooked. I love my Instant Pot but I still use my old fashioned slow cooker. I do not use the slow cooker function on my Instant Pot.

Vegetable soups are an easy way to get the family to eat more vegetables. Add your favorite sandwich or salad to a bowl of vegetable soup and you are ready to eat.
