In the Muses of a Modern Mystic, Saleem Little explores social and spiritual problems through the heart and mind of the protaganist, a seeker named Salim. In Rumi-like fashion, Salim sells his cleverness in order to buy bewilderment. Although he is endowed with much knowledge, spiritual insight and is well acquainted with metaphysical mysteries but in order to learn he purposely makes himself a student. He often appears naive but in this fashion he continuously grows because he never allows ego to close the door to learning. An old soul in a new eon, "Muses" highlights the difficulty in espousing ancient teachings with modern values.
Jasmine and Salim appear to be total opposites on the surface. Herein lies the dynamics of their attraction. When Jasmine's surface is unveiled she realizes that her naked soul was hurt, confused and misguided and all it needed was realignment. Unmasked, she realizes it was the mask she had been wearing for years that had served as a barrier to the discovery of her soul's mate as well as her sense of self-esteem, self-respect and self-love.
In "Looking Up" Author and Poet S.A.H.E. explores esoteric and symbolic knowledge and attempts to espouse it- even if only allegorically - to the modern physical world. Utilizing metaphysical concepts, S.A.H.E. offers simple solutions to life's adversity and simple inspirations to encourage all to keep...Looking Up!
Cocaine epidemics have twice figured in American history. The first sustained episode of cocaine use and addiction began in the 1880s and lasted into the 1920s. The second began about 1970 and peaked in the late 1980s. Together the two epidemics illustrate a cardinal principle of drug history: what we think about and how we regulate 'consuming habits' depends very much upon the characteristics of those who consume them.
"Why do you keep goin' back to this guy?" I asked, examining the bruises up and down her arms, and the smearing make up she used in an attempt to cover the scars on her body. "I'm afraid to leave." She said into my shirt. "I have a baby with him and not only that, he's usually good to me and Stevie. It's just that alcohol, when he gets drunk he talks with his fist, maybe it's my fault sometimes... I know you probably think I'm stupid." "Not stupid, just blind. You have to leave before things get out of hand.
Simply seeking serendipity...this thing has been growing inside of me since I read my first book...this quest consumes a greater portion of my day-dreaming minutes and I am reminded of this trek with each story, each poem, each essay... It is the quest to compose the Opus Magnum...the classic piece of literature...this anthology comprises my humble attempts to compose such a piece...

As always, her erotic fantasy was slowly making its transcendence from thought to reality, from imagining to..."Oh God..." Elaine thought in a semi state of panic. It was happening again. Elaine's well-defined cheeks reddened in embarrassment as she inched out of her rotating leather chair and ducked into the restroom. Once inside, she quickly locked the door behind her. Closing her eyes, Elaine was hoping the darkness would allow her to hang onto the last fraction of the phantasy that had initiated this blissful reaction. As with all mind trips and abstractions however, the image dissipated and the frustration that always followed was emerging.Thankful for the privacy, with her back planted firmly against the door, Elaine exhaled a mixture of anxiety and euphoria. This emotional gumbo had to be released. It was intoxicating and Elaine desperately needed her sobriety to return so she could finish her work.Instead however, the reverie was returning.Elaine scolded and disciplined herself. Or at least she tried to. That ubiquitous voice of reason was reminding her that there was no way she should ever allow a man to have that much power over her, especially considering the relationship was still no deeper than a few calculated compliments, basic work chatter, and impassioned imaginings.Reminding herself why she had entered the restroom in the first place, Elaine eased her hand into her moistened satin panties, over the well-manicured patch of delicate pubic hairs, and onto her labia. She shook her head and smiled at herself in innocent shame. He had done it again. He had made her orgasm without the slightest touch of a hand, just a transmission of sexual energy and excitement. Catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror she laughed uncontrollably, first internally then out loud as she was unable to control the joyful laughter. The most she was able to do was muffle it with her cupped hands."This man..." Elaine thought as she pulled her panties off completely, wrapped them in paper towels and stuffed them deep into the trash bin."Welp, there goes another pair." She smiled as she began to wash her hands. Staring into her own imagination was enticing but glaring up at her reflection in the mirror was disgracing. Her reflection reflected her reality, her musing merely her desires. Her mental paramour's face had abruptly been replaced by her boyfriend's causing a cascade of shame to wash over her spirit. This was fun, exciting even, but dangerous and guilt-riddling. The reality was she had a man at home. The situation wasn't perfect but none were and regardless of which side her relationship was on at the moment, the fact was she was in one. This was what Elaine hated the most. She wanted to enjoy these mental climaxes without remorse but more often than not guilt eclipsed the passion in the end. Realizing she had once again allowed herself to experience the internal conflict, she washed herself as if to wash away the guilt and with determination to ignore her curiosity, Elaine made her way back to her workstation.
"U-N-I-Verse" is a platform for all "seekers" to share wisdom with the world. It is a series where writers from all religions, schools of thought and walks of life come together to discuss differences and similarities in order to shed light on and build upon common points of interest that may lead to Universal balance and harmony. This series is intended to unify the human family and realign all with the cosmic symphony that man's ego and pride has disrupted. In Volume five of the U-N-I-VERSE series, author Salim Shabazz (formerly Saleem Little) invites Authors Dane Brown, George Hopkins, Shavar L. Thompson, and poet Eza to share their thoughts, poems, and social examinations in a collective endeavor to raise consciousness and awareness while preserving the art form of poetry and expanding the horizons of literature. It is said that too often only the paper listens. Too often great ideas, thoughts, stories, etc. remain confined in the mind of their creator. Be it Writer's block, a writer's fear, or a person's unawareness of their writing potential, stories and ideas too often never reach the consciousness of the masses. Writer's Block is one author's first step in a quest to inspire more to inspire by the pen.
Lena and Dante had a wonderful relationship. They had spent the last two years learning each other and what they had learned was that they loved each other enough to get married. Now engaged, Lena gets the crazy idea to try something fun to spice up their relationship; she decides to bring in another woman for a one night, no strings attached, ménage a trois. It was a fantasy of hers as an adolescent woman and one she wanted to fulfill before she and Dante finalized their marriage. Unfortunately for Sophia, sex with no strings is hard for an emotionally and romantically starved woman such as herself who is truly seeking nothing but love to erase the years of pain and abuse she's endured. Special is the story of one couple's fantasy becoming their worst nightmare and an innocent experiment that soon becomes a fatal attraction.
G.O.D. is the story of two men from two totally different background whose lives are correlated by the same plight; poverty and destitution. Though seperated by an entire ocean, their lives runs strangely parallel. Soon the lives of these two men clash in a bloody war erupted by the murder of a mutual acquaintance. Wally is an impoverished boy from the streets of Buffalo, New York. Hamid is raised in the destitute province of Helmand in Afghanistan. Both boys lose their fathers to murders early in their lives and their single mothers struggle to care for them, leaving the boys to fend for themselves the best way they can. After Wally is taken in by a local drug lord, he and his friends begin to climb out of poverty. After Hamid and his sisters are adopted by an Opium Lord from Afghanistan, he is sent to America for schooling and training for what his adopted father, Nasser, sees as his master plan to undermine America. Bigger than the lives of these two men, Wally and Hamid, however is the ubiquitous theme of individual perceptions of God that permeates the novel. This force's (God) presence, or the lack thereof, reflects the level of attrocities endured by each and every character. G.O.D. is the story of Gold, Oil & Drugs (G.O.D.) and the violent wars man finds himself in, in his worship of these vices.
