After the fall of Baladone, Kaing is apprised of an opportunity to assassinate King Grack at the Elvish capital city of Yakt Tscare. Kaing and the survivors of Baladone make their way to the capital and are assisted by the rebel elves of the Archimedes spy ring to vanquish The Dark King at last.
When the earth was new, through a gateway to an underground sanctuary called the Underworld, a gargoyle named Kaing does his best to live his personal life as simply as possible. As his nation prepares for war, Kaing resumes his not-so-simple duties as a military trainer when plots of treason and murder are set into motion-pointing to him as the perpetrator. As his life is thrown into turmoil, Kaing and his family begin to catch glimpses of their unusual abilities and the roles they are to play in a purpose much larger than they had imagined.
Following the instructions of a legendary retired general of the Crimson army, Kaing embarks on a quest of desperation to reach the Ice Maiden in hopes that she will help him free his brother and the other Shendoa prisoners from the Keep of Baladone. After The Battle of High Hill, the surviving Shendoa soldiers flee to every quarter in hopes of survival, and Kaing has made his way to the Keep of Baladone to find his brother has been imprisoned. Promising to help free him, Kaing goes on a quest to raise an army strong enough to free his brother. Kaing begins his epic journey by calling on the ancient Maunths, only to be directed south to seek the aid of others that may have the power to help him in his quest.
After centuries of hiding in the sanctuary of the Underworld Cavern, Ghon Coal leads the Shendoa army to attack Grack's castle in The Battle of High Hill. Kaing, an exiled military leader of the Shendoa army provides support for his brother Ghon as the talents of Grack's general Prince Sarle push the Shendoa army to its limits. Grack's Dragon Riders continue to hunt the elite Watchers of Shendoa, getting closer and closer to Kaing. With each encounter proving more difficult to survive and the battle reaching a tipping point, Kaing prepares to face the riders in a final showdown.

As war comes closer between his nation and the kingdom on the outside world, Kaing does his best to protect his brother and army by watching them from afar, and warning them as new dangers arise from the Dark King. All the while, Kaing and his family begin to catch glimpses of their unusual abilities and the roles they are to play in a purpose much larger than they had imagined.
