Greer Wells is a promising, and dedicated young attorney working in the Boston District Attorney's office. After being dropped at the train station for her evening commute, Greer is witness to the shooting of her friend, and boss Assistant District Attorney Michael Ripley. ADA Ripley had feared he might be in danger, and that Greer might have been as well, simply by association. He had hired a private investigator to keep watch over his friend. In the aftermath of the murder, it seems the investigation by the police, and the FBI has stalled. But Greer and the PI continue their own investigation. As they follow clues known only to them, will they uncover the reason for Michael's murder? Will they discover who orchestrated the murder? Will they eventually become stalled as the authorities seem to be? Or will they uncover something far more sinister?
In the middle of her last semester of grad school, Charlotte Garner flees New York, for a place with happier memories. A place where she spent time in her youth. Will she ever be able to escape the mess she had made of her life? Will her life in Nantucket be the peaceful, wonderful life she remembers? Or is she destined to repeat the bad decisions she has made? Once settled in her new island home, Charlotte finds work, makes friends, and finds herself in a relationship that doesn't seem to have the complexities of the one that forced her out of the city. But, could her life actually settle this quickly? Could the island she remembers so fondly provide her with the refuge she sought? Or could this new personal voyage wreak additional havoc and destruction on her already pathetic life.
