The worrying thing about interculturality is that the efforts of thinkers from antiquity to the present day have not influenced the politicians who have decision-making power. Indeed, the times in which we live seem paradoxical. We live in an age of globalization, tolerance, communication and information, yet we continue to see a predisposition towards nationalism and patriotism. One of the theses of this research was to highlight the apology for intercultural communication advocated by a number of writers and thinkers from different disciplines. However, this apology must be seen in relation to the political forces that are increasingly seeking to establish power in different ways. The rise in power of communication as a desired idea or ideal seems to have as its inevitable corollary the massive appearance of various forms of extremism. Utopian enthusiasm for a unified world has given rise to withdrawal and rejection of the other.
Communication runs the risk of becoming a kind of empty signifier that only comes into existence through the semantic habitat it calls forth and elicits, or through the investment of researchers, each according to his or her own vision of the world and approach. Quite simply, it's a polysemous concept, giving rise to a kind of intellectual imagery that brings together phenomena of various kinds, taken from linguistics, semiology, literature, sociology, anthropology, ethnography, psychology and so on.
