Nella giovinezza vive fra Pinerolo, Torino e Milano, trascorrendo un periodo a Lione per fare pratica commerciale. Appurato di non essere tagliato per gli affari, inizia una stagione di fermento intellettuale, stringendo amicizia, tra gli altri, con Ugo Foscolo e Vincenzo Monti. Nel 1813 scrive la prima tragedia, “Laodamia”, a cui faranno seguito “Eufemio di Messina” e “Francesca da Rimini”. Nel 1820 è arrestato dalla polizia austriaca per l’affiliazione a una società segreta, venendo incarcerato dapprima a Venezia, poi nel famigerato Spielberg di Brünn. Da questa esperienza, conclusasi nel 1830, Pellico trae l’ispirazione per la sua opera più celebre, “Le mie prigioni” (1832). Tornato in libertà, continuerà a scrivere tragedie, poesie e romanzi, la maggior parte dei quali lasciati incompiuti.
