Abuse of senior citizens is often an unspoken issue in India. Compared to other kinds of abuse, senior citizen abuse is unique in the fact that it often happens within the same household in which the senior citizens are staying, the abusers are family members on whom the person is dependent and most often the abuses go unreported. Even though traditionally Indian culture promotes respect for senior citizens, with the changing lifestyles and moving away from joint families and even nuclear families, abuse has become a big issue. Some people may treat their senior citizen parents or family members as a burden and not look after them well, others may be more interested in their property to which they may hold the title, and ill treat them in order to get rights to the property. This problem may be becoming worse because of the Covid pandemic, since senior citizens may be less mobile, less familiar with apps and services and also scared to move out for fear of catching the disease. Moreover, senior citizens are often scared psychologically of courts and police and may be unfamiliar with laws protecting them, in case of abuses. Lack of familiarity with technology is another big problem, since many of the protections depend on access to the internet and filing online complaints at various web portals and senior citizen helplines. Because of all this, senior citizens even if they face abuse are reluctant or not able to report it. Although laws and institutions do exist in India to prevent abuse and provide relief to senior citizens, in practice there may be lack of awareness of such laws, also it may be difficult for senior citizens to access these protections due to reasons mentioned. Hence, in this book we focus on the practical steps that a senior citizen or their well-wishers need to take to obtain support and protection.
The environment is one of the most precious resources that is available to any country and its people. For rapidly developing countries like India, there are a range of environmental problems such as pollution, deforestation, disappearance of wildlife and sea life. Environmental laws are thus needed to protect and preserve the environment from destruction. In this book, we first present an introduction to issues related to ecology and environment. We then summarize the main laws that are available to protect the environment. These laws cover different aspects of the environment such as wildlife, pollution control, forest cover and waste management. Taken together, these laws present a comprehensive system to protect and preserve the biodiversity and environmental resources connected with the air, water and soil of India. It is hoped that this book would provide a good introductory guidance to people who are interested in environmental issues and who wish to be familiar with the laws in India related to the environment.

The Indian court system is a large institution. There are thousands of cases being heard daily in the different courts of the land, big and small. Some of the cases run into years and others into decades. It thus affects lakhs or crores of people. In this book, we write a few stories illustrating different aspects of the Indian court system, how it affects the common people in different situations of life. One of the stories is interpreting the timeless Indian epic, the Mahabharata, as a dispute fought in the Indian courts.None of these stories are real, any similarity with persons living or dead is purely a matter of coincidence. Our aim is to present the Indian court system from different viewpoints, and thus help the reader to gain an appreciation of the experience of different aspects of the court system for the common man. At the end of each story, we have added a section on lessons to learn from that story. The intention is to show how the common man can succeed in getting justice if they persevere, even if the process is slow and fraught with difficulties.
Ethical investing, also called Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) or sustainability investing, is growing recently. Investors, particularly younger investors, are getting more concerned over the wider social and other impact of their investments and wish to contribute to positive changes in the world, rather than contribute towards increasing suffering. The highs and lows of the stock markets in different countries further give a push towards ethical investing as a way to locate more stable companies that believe in ethical values and are more likely to be profitable in the long term.In this book, we introduce the concept of ethical investing and consider the avenues by which investors can invest ethically within India today. India has a rich history worthy of preservation. The number of temples, mosques, tombs, ancient city ruins, palaces and other monuments, is staggering in India. Even today, archeologists are finding ruins of great monuments in remote and not so remote locations. Sadly, various factors such as development, erosion etc. have caused and are causing damage to our ancient heritage. Unplanned expansions of cities, building of new roads and shopping malls and residential areas, unrestricted tourism, all often end up eroding what is left of our archeological heritage. In this book we introduce to the reader some concepts related to preservation of ancient buildings and monuments. We discuss about the archeological survey of India, its history and objectives. We introduce world agreements such as the Venice Charter and Burra charter that relate to the principles for preservation of heritage. Then we go through some of the actual preservation and restoration techniques, showing their application in preserving and restoring some famous monuments and not so famous monuments. It is hoped that this book will provide the interested reader with useful information about the concepts and techniques of preservation.
