"Indien i det nittende århundrede" handler om Indiens udvikling i 1800-tallet. Det var et århundrede, der var præget af store omvæltninger både politisk, økonomisk og kulturelt ikke mindst da Storbritannien koloniserede landet i 1858. Bogen beskriver blandt andet det britiske Indiens vækst, handel, opbyggelsen af den moderne indiske stat og Indiens betydning for britisk kapital og britisk industri. Det er et særdeles interessant værk om en periode i både europæisk og asiatisk historie, der trækker politiske spor helt frem til i dag.Sten Konow (1867 - 1948) var en norsk ekspert i asiatiske forhold. Han var cand.mag i indisk kultur og filologi og var ansat som professor ved universitetet i Hamborg og senere ved universitetet i Oslo. Udover videnskabelige afhandlinger skrev han gennem sit liv en række artikler og bidrag til norske og udenlandske tidsskrifter om indiske sprog, kulturer og religioner. Af større værker skrev Konow blandt andet "Ørken og oase. Det inderste Asien i nutid og fortid" fra 1912 og "India. Land og folk" fra 1944.
