The story of two men and the Universe they're exposed to. One man gets to see the very secrets of Creation itself and the other ends up living the most incredible adventure a man could ever conceive of in his wildest imaginings! The latter is accompanied in his adventures by a troupe of a dozen cloned French actors, six male and six female, with a spectrum of personalities and temperaments. This is a character-driven story with intriguing situations of a far-reaching nature, dealing with the always-cogent concepts of being a stranger in a strange land, of the origins and very nature of the Universe and the basic American concepts of life, liberty and the pursuit of anybody who wants to stifle same. It has all the prerequisite technological wonders of a story set in the future, but is here handled a little more realistically than they might be in already accepted sci-fi franchises. You will love this book.
This is a breezier read than the previous "Cassiopeia" books, more full of humor than its companion tomes in the series. It follows the Kleinkinders as they assimilate to living on Earth after being rooted in the Centauri system for a millennium, and Chloe Wymark as she lords it over a prospering Western Provisional government. Two new characters are introduced in Pilar Dospilar and Dant Dosjin, two visitors from the microverse within Avedon 717, the anomaly that gives the book its title. Being observers and students of the Universe, they take it upon themselves to enlighten the denizens of the Terran system as to the true nature of the ionized macrocosm. This is a "funnier" book than the previous "Cassiopeia" novels, a series already rife with humor, and that makes it an enjoyable read.
New characters are introduced as the story of a new group of expatriate Earthers in the Proxima Centauri star system is told. These are people who, after initially being welcomed by the native populace of the fairly civilized world, were eventually viewed suspiciously as witches and charlatans, and forced to live in poverty and desperation for their thousand year stint in the system. Little Zachary's world is expanded, as is the world of MarsShield's secret benefactor. Follow these new people as they put a very human spin on the continuing story of the Cassiopeia's far-flung former crew and contingent

Yet Harvey's concerns for his future are soon forgotten after reading the Arctic adventures of Simon Draper, a double leg amputee himself, who experienced phantom limb sensations so real he believed he could stand and run. Harvey is driven to replicate this experience and makes plans for his own journey. Yet he soon begins to question his motives and the demands he places on others. Can his desire for physical and mental rehabilitation be so easily resolved? Set against a backdrop of nineteen eighties political unrest, the story follows Harvey's trackless path towards independent adulthood, as he confronts not only his own disability but the unerring nature of life itself.
