Originally published in 1978, the contributors to this volume, including the leading figures in experimental psychopathology, were largely concerned with deducing the behaviour of schizophrenics from general psychological theories of language, learning and cognition. Their emphasis on deduction reflected a modern reliance on laboratory experimentation, and, taken as a whole, the chapters cover the breadth and variety of current approaches of the time to the study of schizophrenic language and cognition. The first part of the volume is concerned with recent developments in the study of schizophrenic language. The second part deals with various aspects of schizophrenic cognition. The final chapter, by the editor, attempts to review and integrate what was currently known about schizophrenic cognition and language. This chapter contrasts the various experimental methodologies used to validate theories by pointing out areas of agreement and disagreement as well as possible directions for future theory and research. Here is a book that at the time presented the most up-to-date overview available on language and thought in schizophrenia. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

What is the American Way? What is the American Dream? What is your vision of America at its best? How close is your vision to reality?Like any country, the United States of America is far from perfect. More than 200 years ago, however, a handful of men developed and shared a set of ideas that has served as the bedrock for this country and this society. Those ideas, like all ideas, created an outcome. And that outcome has saved more lives from tyranny, poverty, fascism, and socialism than any other country in the history of civilization.Imagine if you could develop and share a thought with such a remarkable and enduring outcome? You can. You have the power to begin doing so today.Using a professionally developed process called High Consciousness Thinking, literally anybody can hone their ability to think and create an emotion, which drives behavior which leads to an outcome. If you, like so many people, wish to unlock the full potential of the American experiment, the keys are here for you in these pages. Begin a selfless journey that will help you inspire other Americans to create a movement that empowers citizens to succeed based on their own set of skills while dismantling the false premise that we should look to the government for solutions. You are the solution.
Fiction. Short Stories. "Schwartz appreciates that a compelling plotline can contribute intensity to the brief life of a short story. All of these 11 stories arrest the reader from their opening paragraphs; their fully engaging plots include a western farmer allowing a hippie-dippie couple the temporary use of a cabin on his property but finding peace and love quickly turning to violence; a young person's crush on a cousin turns very provocative when the cousin, years later, shows up for a reunion no longer her original gender; a high-school teacher holds a gun to his head in front of his class with the full intention of using it; and a married man faces, under stressful circumstances, his own competitiveness with both his former girlfriend and his wife. But Schwartz is careful to use his strong, even page-turning plots to service the short story form's primary responsibility: to capture a character's most salient traits. His easy, unpretentious writing style not only adds to the stories' accessibility and resonance but also supplies the solid amalgam between plot and character, resulting in a collection to be held up as evidence that the short story not only endures but also flourishes."--Brad Hooper

In search of a new life, Reuben and Ardith Rosenfeld and their two children move from Chicago to the small town of Welton, Colorado, looking for all the hope that the burgeoning West has to offer--its abundance of jobs, space, sunshine, prosperity, and the promise of reinvention. Reuben, a former copyeditor at the Chicago Tribune, purchases the local town paper, the Welton Sentinel. Ardith stays home and copes with the task of fixing up an older house, which suffers such disrepair that on Halloween it's mistaken for part of a haunted house tour. Teenaged Harry continues his life as a troubled loner, skipping school and losing his tooth in a mysterious encounter. Meanwhile, Reuben, unaware that Ardith is having an affair, worries about his wife's growing unhappiness and distance from the family. One night, after a cookout at some friends' dairy farm, a fatal hit-and-run occurs that shocks the community, exposes a secret, and begins to rip apart the Rosenfeld family. The Tenderest of Strings is a riveting, full-hearted story of what it takes to survive as a family in a small Western town that beckons from afar but will put its newcomers to the test of their lives.

Although much of the information used in clinical decision making is objective, the physician's values (a belief that pain relief is more important than potential addiction to pain-killing drugs, for example) and subjectivity are as much a part of the clinical process as the objective findings of laboratory tests.
