Especially the unique ones who question everything. Being in the spirit realm was a lot to take in. It was both exciting and scary, and even more so...was discovering her essence. As far as being branded, she wouldn't have wished that experience on her worst enemy. Maybe. Though Cam`ael has waited for her, he grows frustrated and impatient as the darkness in him begs to be fed. Cam`ael knows that he and Starling will cross paths again. Realizing that she won't remember him, is the most painful of all. Knowing that she will kill him, is the risk he is willing to take to see her again. It doesn't help that Morning Star has been looking for ways to get even, ever since Cam'ael's battle with Drakael. He blames him for Starlings death. He needed to claim her while she was still mortal, not when she became an immortal force to be reckoned with. However, he still wants her- even more so now than before. A new, deadly demon is roaming the Earth, killing higher level fallen, and Cam`ael is about to become his next target. What is forbidden, creates something that may ultimately bring about the invasion of darkness sooner than expected. What lies in darkness, will always come into the light.

It could very well be the answer to the fate of the entire universe and all the beings in it...pending that he can actually read it. Defiance will bring about the true nature of many, and circumstances will turn Starling into one of the deadliest warriors walking. A bounty has been placed on Cam`ael, and an order to capture Starling at any and all cost has been issued. Both Lira's spirit and Spencer, the Earthbound Seraphim, are missing. I went to Germany to see if the people were human. I'd grown up among them, but lived in English speaking countries since I was twenty-two. Though I remembered perfectly well that Germans were human, I'd adopted the Anglo-Saxon view that they were not, a view at once justified by German conduct under National Socialism and at odds with much of what I'd grown up with. The self-division between rejecting German culture and belonging to it pushed me to a tour of places associated with a tradition of being human that contradicts accepted views of German culture, patriotic or hostile. I hoped this might help me to accept my being German. Most of the figures of this tradition are women, Caroline Schlegel, Bettina von Arnim, Käethe Kollwitz, Sophie Scholl, Sigrid Damm. They make up a line of bold creative intellectuality, defiant of the tangle of convention and oppression that may pass for culture and rich in its imagining of freer ways of being human. My accounts of these figures are at once my tribute to them and my educating myself in a German tradition in which I look for self-confirmation. But this recovery by visiting and writing did not heal my self-division about my German heritage. If anything it made it more acute by setting in the history of my country. the human possibility held out by this women's culture-making against the inhuman drive of National Socialism.

Creatures born of a different God, or human beings as we call them, know and understand little about the Universe around them- much less the one that mirrors theirs. Things aren't always what they seem to the naked eye, especially when you aren't paying attention. That's the beauty of their world though, it's so easy to live and thrive undetected. My brother Cole and I are twin Hybrid Hunters. We've lived content and discreetly among and like human beings for so long, that many of us, as well as the Elementals that have become like family, have almost forgotten that- we aren't. Like any race of living beings, it's the bad ones that always ruin it for everyone. No good thing can ever last for long no matter what or where you are. The sudden appearance of a deadly Nocturna on our hidden island turned out to be the least of our worries. It was the unexpected attack that left me at the mercy of a disgusting curse and would forever change my life as a born Hunter. The mysterious stranger who simply showed up to claim the undead intruder, turned out to be far more of a dangerous threat to us. I had to learn quickly that even in a perfect world, the hunter becoming the hunted confirms that every being has something to fear-even the Nocturna. And that hunter is . . . Me.
