This is a 'fiction based on fact' story about my ancestors set in the times and conditions in which they lived from 1760 onwards. It concerns drovers in Wales and Shropshire, the effects of The American War of Independence and the impact of the slave trade. Hereford in the 1800's and life in the Hereford workhouse play a prominent role. There is death by drowning and a court case where one of the two found guilty was transported to Australia; whilst imprisoned the second gave birth to a son. There are the difficulties of bringing up a family in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham during Victorian times. A major part of the story is about my grandmother Susannah, a teacher and then a house maid and her love affair with Evan, a jeweller in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He gives her the love and security which has been lacking in her unhappy childhood and beyond. She becomes a young wife and mother in Birmingham where the Boer War had its impact on her family, and the Great War brought tragic consequences. Discover the Voice family who were agricultural labourers in the small village of Castle Bromwich in Warwickshire; the Hall families; the Hereford Saints; the Howells of Myndtown and the Watkin family who were millers in Kerry in Montgomeryshire. This is the story about the strands of my family drawing together to make me who I am.
This is the true story about a family that left the convenience of town living to embark on an adventure in the English countryside. They bought a run down four-acre smallholding and neglected cottage in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on top of the North Downs in Kent.It is the story of the ups and downs of family life, including their own children, their foster children and their aged relations. It describes the early difficulties of living in and renovating the cottage and the hardships of harsh winters. They had the companionship of their Border Collies, Sheba, Miffy and Sam, and later on their beloved Golden Lurcher, Tess.Sheep, goats, pigs and chickens were part of their new life, prompting the learning of animal husbandry. Read about Chirrup the orphan thrush, Nellie and Gertie, the escapist pigs, fluffy white goat kids and Jacob, the lamb who went to work in a handbag. It tells how they looked after the land and rejoiced in their surroundings. Finally they made an outstandingly beautiful garden, opening to the public under the National Garden Scheme. This helped to raise funds for the charities the scheme supported. This book is illustrated with black and white photographs. Following the popularity of 'From Goats to a Garden' and 'Our Small Stone Cottage in France', Susie has written about her earliest years. Born during the Second World War, she writes in her usual chatty fashion about growing up in Birmingham with her adoptive parents, their friends and relations. Wilful tendencies in her early years morph into clashes with her parents as she becomes a teenager. While they only want what is best for her she finds this claustrophobic. She is glad to get away to the freedom of holidays on the Welsh Borders with family friends and eventually to Teacher Training College. She meets the love of her life and embarks on over fifty years of marriage and raising a family, among other adventures. Finally, she is reunited with the half-sister into whose life she had paid a brief visit over sixty years previously.
