The revolutionary findings of science in the 19th century created a furor in the realms of philosophy, religion, and general culture. Many intellectuals began doubting that the earth was only a few thousand years old or that God had created Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The upholders of conventional religion were, however, not prepared to go down without a fight. And so the former British prime minister William Ewart Gladstone ignited a controversy in the 1880s when he asserted that modern science actually confirmed the account of the creation of man and animal life as found in the Book of Genesis. His article led to a forceful rebuttal by Thomas Henry Huxley, one of the leading scientists of the day and a strong proponent of Darwin's theory of evolution. Over the next several years the controversy continued to play out, shifting focus to the so-called "miracle" of the Gadarene swine (the Gospels' account of how Jesus cured an insane person by expelling demons from his mine and thrusting them into the bodies of swine, who promptly killed themselves). The upshot of the controversy-here reprinted for the first time-shows how the defenders of religion were ill-matched to battle with the proponents of scientific truth.

The inquiry which we undertook, at our last meeting, into the state of our knowledge of the causes of the phenomena of organic nature, -of the past and of the present, -resolved itself into two subsidiary inquiries: the first was, whether we know anything, either historically or experimentally, of the mode of origin of living beings; the second subsidiary inquiry was, whether, granting the origin, we know anything about the perpetuation and modifications of the forms of organic being

MERCHANTS occasionally go through a wholesome, though troublesome and not always satisfactory, process which they term "taking stock." After all the excitement of speculation, the pleasure of gain, and the pain of loss, the trader makes up his mind to face facts and to learn the exact quantity and quality of his solid and reliable possessions.

Our fabulist warns "those who in quarrels interpose" of the fate which is probably in store for them; and, in venturing to place myself between so powerful a controversialist as Mr. Gladstone and the eminent divine whom he assaults with such vigour in the last number of this Review, 1 I am fully aware that I run great danger of verifying Gay's prediction. Moreover, it is quite possible that my zeal in offering aid to a combatant so extremely well able to take care of himself as M. Reville may be thought to savour of indiscretion.

""Hasisadra's Adventure"" is a novel written by Thomas Henry Huxley. The story follows the journey of Hasisadra, a young man who embarks on a quest to find the secret of eternal life. Along the way, he encounters various obstacles and challenges that test his courage and determination. He meets a wise old man who becomes his mentor and guides him through his journey. Together, they travel through different lands and face dangerous creatures, including a giant serpent and a ferocious lion. Hasisadra also meets a beautiful princess who joins him on his quest. As they get closer to their goal, they discover that the secret to eternal life lies within themselves. The book is a thrilling adventure story that explores the themes of mortality, immortality, and the human quest for knowledge and understanding. It is a classic tale that has captivated readers for generations. It is as indubitable as it is incomprehensible to most of us, that, for thousands of years, a great people, quite as intelligent as we are, and living in as high a state of civilisation as that which had been attained in the greater part of Europe a few centuries ago, entertained not the slightest doubt that Anu, Bel, Ea, Istar, and the rest, were real personages, possessed of boundless powers for good and evil. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

In controversy, as in courtship, the good old rule to be off with the old before one is on with the new, greatly commends itself to my sense of expediency. And, therefore, it appears to me desirable that I should preface such observations as I may have to offer upon the cloud of arguments (the relevancy of which to the issue which I had ventured to raise is not always obvious) put forth by Mr. Gladstone in the January number of this review, 1 by an endeavour to make clear to such of our readers as have not had the advantage of a forensic education the present net result of the discussion.
