Something magical sets apart those of us who dream of an overseas life, working to make it a reality and those who remain content to stay in their home country. Not to imply that one group is superior to the other, but the curiosity of far off places has been a strong influence on my life and I became determined to follow that curiosity to fruition. The dream of living and working overseas is held by many but experienced by only a few; the excitement of following one's profession in some exotic foreign land is certainly a strong lure for many people. There is the issue of adjustment is to life in a foreign country, but what about when they come home? This is often the most difficult adjustment to make yet is greatly misunderstood and ignored by many "overseas enthusiasts" as well as the companies that send them to these exotic lands. My curiosity and lack of contentment to "stay home" burned strongly in my soul. I was one of the lucky ones. I made for myself the opportunities to live overseas for thirty years. I felt comfortably "at home" in my adopted country, but I began to feel a stranger during short return trips to the USA, comfortable only in the knowledge that soon I would return to my safe haven overseas. I even had a feeling of superiority, knowing that I did not have to stay here and soon would be winging my way across the South Atlantic Ocean to my seaside refuge at the tip of South Africa where the two oceans meet. This book "The Return" describes my life abroad and the difficulties when faced with repatriation back to the United States. Many expats returning from extensive overseas assignments encounter this difficult adjustment process; "home" has changed, the expat has changed and often the perspective of the "home country" has changed. I don't think that I, or anyone else, has a cure for this condition; I have written these pages to demonstrate that it is indeed real, how deeply it has affected me and that other expats should recognize it and be prepared, in the best way they can. I have had a passion for railways from a very early age and this became an important feature of my life, prompting my urge for overseas adventures and of my thirty - year stay in South Africa. I describe this passion in some detail in this book as it provides the key to why the "overseas life" became so ingrained in me; it had become the "drug" that sustained my existence. There were also significant political events unfolding in South Africa during my stay that needed to be included in this book as they affected many peoples' perceptions of that country and the everyday life of its residents. I have also added many personal anecdotes regarding my life in that country and some of the more notable political intrigues that have shaped the former "land of Apartheid".

The Chicago Druid and the Ugly Princess is a story that moves from a time of Irish folklore to modern-day Chicago. The mix of this mythological Irish background with contemporary American life is one of the novel's strengths and provides many instances of humour and contrast. It follows the adventures of Fionnuala, a beautiful princess transformed into the ugliest women imaginable by the druid Lochlain, before being sent into the future. In modern Chicago, she encounters madcap characters, such as the crafty Patience, who uses Fionnuala's powers to make money gambling, and implicates them in gang warfare. She is hunted down by the magical characters from her past, who are searching for the mythological Salmon of Knowledge. In between she is also targeted by the police as a suspect in a terrorist case, and is on a mission to regain her former beauty by finding her one true love. The tone moves from the seriousness of the prologue to something altogether quicker and more irreverent as the novel progresses, keeping the story modern and the reader interested.
It was during a late July night in Southern Finland as our Helsinki - Leningrad Express rumbled towards the Russian border when Misha somberly warned us: "We are about to enter the land of the enemy". Misha's expression turned stern and foreboding as Lee, Bernie, Betty and I sat dumfounded in our compartment, wondering what to expect next. We were on an organized professional railway tour of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe during the height of the "cold war" and Misha was our guide/interpreter, leading us to this forbidden land. But that was my second trip to the USSR, the first was a Trans - Siberian escapade in 1974 and the third, took place during July, 2016, which included a long - awaited reunion with the Trans - Siberian Railway. These pages include a description and my impressions of that first rail trip 42 years ago in contrast with my most recent trip to ride that same iconic train, just a couple of months' ago. Soon after my first Trans - Siberian rail adventure, rail journeys became the focus of my travel excitement and since then I have logged thousands of miles on both rickety and modern railways, bone - shattering roads, tranquil and wind - swept waterways of South East Asia, Central Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and North America. Each of these trips provided mind-expanding experiences and an irresistible urge to do more. I soon began to realize that I was somehow different from most other people when it came to travel choices. My travel pleasures were other people's pain and discomfort. I planned trips to places from where others were escaping. I rode trains other people shun with disgust; one such train was the Limbe to Monkey Bay rattletrap operated by the Malawi Railways. Coaches were filthy, the condition of the toilet unspeakable (use only when holding your breath) as we endured the nine-hour slog through central Africa - "the worst day of my life" my wife exclaimed with disgust. I thought the trip was exhilarating, though one had to step carefully when entering the loo. I traveled through war zones with keen anticipation, not out of a sense of bravado but just to capture the experience, looking for that special moment of satisfaction, which perhaps has been shared by few others. The romantic lure of the Trans - Siberian Railway became a powerful travel urge tugging strongly ever since I read and re-read the travel agent's brochures in early 1974. I had never been overseas and had no great interest to travel, but somehow, the Trans - Siberian was different. I loved to ride trains, and this one certainly appeared worthy to become my first international rail adventure. In December of that year, I took the plunge that hooked me on overseas travel for the rest of my life. This book describes that first trip and the second journey during 2016 as well as several other interesting Russian rail adventures. Russia has been transformed from a country of many state - subsidized services to a market economy where people must pay their share for all commodities. This clearly has caused some upheaval in the economic system of the country, and Russian citizens needed to become accustomed to the new "order". These events have had both positive and negative impacts on rail travelers. But I would conclude that Russian rail adventures are just as exciting and dramatic experiences as they were 40 years ago.

In the warmth of Mulligans, a cosy Irish pub where the Barman knows everything there is to know about serving pints of Guinness, as well as everything there is to know about nearly everything else, one might have supposed that the dramas of real life could be left behind. NoT so. From the comfort of Mulligans "snug", all the problems of everyday living are presented, debated, and resolved. Whether it's the traumas suffered by Fitzer the Flasher, Kathy the Dominatrix, Crazy Mary, the Burglar, the Builder, the Corporation Man, the Green Man, the Curate, the Priest, the Sergeant or even the fearsome Chapter of Mothers of Seven or More Children, a division of the Legion of Irish Catholic Mothers, it will find its solution over a pint or three of dark drink. "Dark Drink and Conversation" may be the funniest book of the decade, and yet behind the humour there are compelling stories and more than a grain of truth and reality in the characters, the mysteries, the triumphs and the disasters

Trains are the greatest dream machines. From the moment I step aboard I feel transformed into another dimension. Views of the outside world sliding by my window, some familiar, some new are soon swept away as the train glides out of the station, snaking through the city limits, leaving forever, bound for magical places with exotic landscapes and the promise and at the same time, the dread, of the unknown. My passion for riding trains and tracing their historical roots began at an early age, when I diced with death while playing on the tracks of the high - speed (at that time) main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad's New York - Washington line; and I have been riding the rails ever since throughout Africa, Asia, South East and Central Asia in search of new adventures. My early interest in railways naturally prompted my passion for travel, first domestically following many childhood rail trips in the US. After those early days of domestic travel, when my financial resources became sufficient, travel borders fell away, opening up a world of possibilities. The subject of my previous books has focused on railway travel in exotic places - in Africa from Cape to Cairo; Russia on the Trans - Siberian, Japan, China and Central Asia. Temporarily, at least, I have decided to depart from these exotic "third world" settings for my rail travel stories and focus on locations in Europe and following some investigations, found myself on the slopes of the Harz Mountains of northern Germany. These mysterious Harz mountains, located about 130 km to the southeast of Hannover, in addition to being the source of witchcraft and countless folk tales in norther Germany, are also the home of a 140 - km narrow - gauge (1.000 meter) railway network known as the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen largely powered by a fleet of 25 elderly steam locomotives that regularly smoke up the region, (some built as far back as 1897) which is the real reason the region sparked my interest. This was to be my first candidate of the tour of the "secret railways of Europe". Also, tucked in the northern slice of the Netherlands jutting out into Lake Ijssel (formerly known as the Zuiderzee), a closed off bay bordering on the North Sea, a tiny 20 - km standard gauge rail line meanders through the Westfrisian countryside from Hoorn to Medemblik, offering a combination steam train/boat experience, all located some 45 km from Amsterdam. After exploring these two gems of steam railways I made my way to England, burrowing under the Channel on the Eurostar, and contrasting this totally boring transit of "La Manche" with the traditional ferries that plied the route for so many years. While somewhat out of place in this description of European rail stories, riding on "The Canadian" from Vancouver to Toronto has been a long-time ambition of mine and it serves to complete this set of varied rail experiences just before Covid effectively shut down international journeys. This proved to be an excellent rail experience, with full dining car and lounge service; unique in North America as Amtrak has all but trashed these amenities.
