Oxidative stress refers to an imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals in the body. Free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an unbalanced number of electrons. The body creates free radicals during regular metabolic processes. Oxidative stress happens naturally and contributes in the aging process. It can occur due to a variety of reasons including air pollutants, consumption of alcohol, radiation, cold, drugs, toxins, and trauma. In the body, numerous pathophysiological conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, atherosclerosis, heart attack, cancers and gene mutations are caused by oxidative stress. It may also lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Certain dietary and lifestyle adjustments may aid in the reduction of oxidative stress. These include exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy body weight, and eating a well-balanced nutritious diet rich in vegetables and fruits. This book contains some path-breaking studies related to the molecular basis of oxidative stress. It will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.
