It was weird how the apocalypse snuck up on you. In the movies, there was always the one big event - the nuclear war, the virus infected monkey that bites the animal rights protester, whatever - and then everything goes to shit in the next 15 minutes.Reality wasn't like that, though. In the real world, things went to shit step by step by step, so slowly that you barely noticed, but then every now and then you look up and see it with fresh eyes, and wonder how the hell it got to be like this. At first the chance of the asteroid Mammon hitting was 1 in 1,000. Then 1 in 100. Then 1 in 10. For deep sea saturation divers and old oil rig buddies Tom, Alejandro, and Rob the end of the world is here, and they missed their chance to escape the city to a bug out ranch inland ... but then the call comes. If they're willing to do a mission, of the most dangerous sort, in the worst conditions possible, they - and their families - just might make it through. ...if everything goes just right. ...and if no one double crosses them.
In 2055, nine years before the events of The Powers of the Earth, US Special Forces soldier John Hayes discovers a secret research project that's being shut down by the Bureau of Sustainable Research. Are the reports of uplifted dogs - creatures genetically engineered to have human intelligence - true? Can John sit by while bureaucrats end the project - and incinerate all the inconvenient evidence?
