Der erste Teil behandelt das Leben und die Briefe, im zweiten Teil folgt eine thematisch strukturierte Darstellung der zentralen Themen des paulinischen Denkens, das so in seiner historischen Genese wie in seiner Systemqualitat erfasst wird. Drei Aspekte werden dabei in der Neuauflage ausgebaut und gestarkt: 1) Die Frage nach dem Ort des Paulus in der Religions- und Philosophiegeschichte seiner Zeit. 2) Die Einbindung des Paulus in die Konfliktgeschichte des fruhen Christentums. 3) Paulus als theologischer Denker, der den Vergleich mit den Philosophen seiner Zeit nicht scheuen muss.
