HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics.I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey work of the stars...First published in 1855, and edited, revised and expanded over thirty years, 'Leaves of Grass' has become one of the most celebrated poetry collections in the history of American literature. A master of free verse, Walt Whitman captures the true spirit of his homeland and its people through his poetry. He explores a wide range of themes, encompassing American identity and cultural values, democracy, nature and the mysteries of the human spirit.Featuring the poems of the original 1855 edition, 'Leaves of Grass' remains an influential work within the American literary tradition, studied and treasured around the world.
ONE OF THE CENTRAL WORKS OF AMERICAN POETRY First published in 1855, this poetry collection by American poet, Walt Whitman is a celebration of his philosophy of life and humanity, and spans the human element from the perspective of both the mind and the body. Instead of focusing on religion or spirituality, Leaves of Grass focuses mainly on celebrating the body, exalting nature, praising the senses, and the material world. He was greatly influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Transcendentalist movement. The writing, which was highly controversial and condemned as immoral due to its explicit sexual imagery, is with the exception of one poem, an innovative free style verse which does not rhyme or follow the standard rules for meter and line length. This collection of loosely-connected poems was a work in progress through over four decades. When Whitman published the first edition of Leaves of Grass at his own expense, it was a volume of only twelve poems. He spent most of his life writing and rewriting the book until at the end, after four decades, he published the final version containing over 400 poems only weeks before he died in 1892. In what is regarded by many scholars, to be a completely "do-it-yourself" project, the collection has infiltrated popular culture and is recognized today as one of the central works of American poetry. Many movements have used Whitman's work throughout the years as a means to further social and political change.
Walt Whitman is oe of America's most celebrated poets, and he was famous among his contemporaries in the mid-19th century, but that wasn't necessarily a good thing. The essayist and journalist made waves with his anthology Leaves of Grass, a collection of poetry that bridged the gaps between Transcendentalism and Realism but was considered obscene by much of the general public at the time. Nevertheless, his influential collection subsequently made him one of the greatest inspirations of generations of poets and writers, and it helped establish him as the "father of free verse".
– Gemt, men aldrig glemt.

In 1855 Walt Whitman published Leaves of Grass, the work which defined him as one of America's most influential voices, and which he added to throughout his life. A collection of astonishing originality and intensity, it spoke of politics, sexual emancipation and what it meant to be an American. From the joyful 'Song of Myself' and 'I Sing the Body Electric' to the elegiac 'When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd', Whitman's art fuses oratory, journalism and song in a vivid celebration of humanity.

"Drum-Taps" by Walt Whitman is an affirmative and poignant collection of poems that reflects the poet's deep engagement with the American Civil War. Published during the mid-19th century, Whitman's work captures the emotional and physical toll of war while celebrating the resilience and spirit of the American people. In "Drum-Taps," readers can expect a series of verses that provide a vivid and personal portrayal of the Civil War experience. Whitman, often referred to as the "poet of democracy," likely employs a free verse style to convey the raw and unfiltered emotions of soldiers on the battlefield, as well as the impact of the war on the nation. The title, "Drum-Taps," suggests a thematic focus on the military and the rhythmic beats of war drums, emphasizing the sounds and cadences associated with conflict. Whitman's verses may explore themes of camaraderie, sacrifice, and the profound human experiences that emerge during times of strife.

One of the Greatest Poems in American Literature Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was considered by many to be one of the most important American poets of all time. He had a profound influence on all those who came after him. "Song of Myself", a portion of Whitman's monumental poetry collection "Leaves of Grass", is one of his most beloved poems. It was through this moving piece that Whitman first made himself known to the world. One of the most acclaimed of all American poems, it is written in Whitman's signature free verse style, without a regular form, meter, or rhythm. His lines have a mesmerizing chant-like quality, as he sought to make poetry more appealing. Few poems are as fun to read aloud as this one. Considered to be the core of his poetic vision, this poem is an optimistic and inspirational look at the world in 1855. It is exhilarating, epic, and fresh in its brilliant and fascinating diction and wordplay as it tries to capture the unique meaning of words of the day, while also embracing the rapidly evolving vocabularies of the sciences and the streets. Far ahead of its time, it was considered by many social conservatives to be scandalous and obscene for its depiction of sexuality and desire, while at the same time, critics hailed the poem as a modern masterpiece. This first version of "Song of Myself" is far superior to the later versions and will delight readers with the playfulness of its diction as it glorifies the self, body, and soul."I am large, I contain multitudes,"
THICK-SPRINKLED BUNTING Thick-sprinkled bunting! flag of stars!Long yet your road, fateful flag¿long yet your road, and lined with bloody death,For the prize I see at issue at last is the world,All its ships and shores I see interwoven with your threads greedy banner;Dream'd again the flags of kings, highest borne, to flaunt unrival'd?O hasten flag of man¿O with sure and steady step, passing highest flags of kings,Walk supreme to the heavens mighty symbol¿run up above them all,Flag of stars! thick-sprinkled bunting! BEAT! BEAT! DRUMS! Beat! beat! drums!¿blow! bugles! blow!Through the windows¿through doors¿burst like a ruthless force,Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation,Into the school where the scholar is studying;Leave not the bridegroom quiet¿no happiness must he have now with his bride,Not the peaceful farmer any peace, ploughing his field or gathering his grain,So fierce you whirr and pound you drums¿so shrill you bugles blow. Beat! beat! drums!¿blow! bugles! blow!Over the traffic of cities¿over the rumble of wheels in the streets; Are beds prepared for sleepers at night in the houses? no sleepers must sleep in those beds,No bargainers' bargains by day¿no brokers or speculators¿would theycontinue?Would the talkers be talking? would the singer attempt to sing?Would the lawyer rise in the court to state his case before the judge? Then rattle quicker, heavier drums¿you bugles wilder blow. Beat! beat! drums!¿blow! bugles! blow!Make no parley¿stop for no expostulation,Mind not the timid¿mind not the weeper or prayer,Mind not the old man beseeching the young man,Let not the child's voice be heard, nor the mother's entreaties,Make even the trestles to shake the dead where they lie awaiting the hearses,So strong you thump O terrible drums¿so loud you bugles blow.
