Sie war nun alt und grau und gelassen mit ihren fünfundsechzig Jahren und hatte viele Runzeln im Gesicht und Falten in den Lippen, und ihre Hände waren dürr und welk und ihre Augen trübe. Es ging auch nicht mehr so wie früher mit dem Gehen, mitdem Bücken und Stehen, mit dem Hantieren und Arbeiten ¿ es ging alles mit Geächz und Gestöhn und Beschwerde ¿ und manches ging auch gar nicht mehr. Nur das Stricken, das Klappern mit den Nadeln, das war noch so leicht und flink und geschickt wie vor Jahren ¿ und das ging so von selbst geradezu, daß sie noch in ihr Nachmittagsnickerchen hinein stricken konnte und schon vorm rechten Wiedererwachen die Nadeln wieder klappern ließ. Nur die alte Schwarzwälderin im Kasten war sich darin mit ihr gleich geblieben ¿ und wenn sie während ihres Nachmittagsschläfchens täglich einen kleinen Ausstand machte, so entschädigte sich die Schwarzwälderin von ein Paar Jahren zu ein paar Jahren mit einem gründlichen Stillestehen, bis sie wieder frisch ausgestäubt und geölt war. Tante Amalie regelte das mit einem Viertelstündchen Tag für Tag.
»Mein Gott«, sagte der alte Golderjahn vor sich hin, »das Leben ist wirklich schwer. Daß es schwer ist, das hätte schon nicht so viel zu sagen, das hat man mit allen Menschen gemein. Aber daß es so rasch ist, das gehört jedem ganz persönlich an. Denn da kommt's drauf an, wie man's lebt. Und wenn man's so langsam lebt wie ich, da ist's noch einmal so rasch. Eh man sich verguckt hat, ist ein Jahr herum. Nun ist heut schon wieder Bündelchestag ¿ noch ein paar Stund, und das Jahr ist auch gegangen. Wieder ein neuer Kalender ¿ und ich muß den nächsten schon fürs nächste Jahr fertig haben, damit ich nicht zu spät komm und der Drucker gleich damit anfangen kann. Ach, 's ist ein Geschäft!«
