Die Versuche und Hindernisse Karls ist eine Kollektivarbeit aus dem Kreise der Berliner Romantiker, eine Parodie auf den Dichter als historische Person (Jean Paul und Johann Heinrich Voß). Das gebildete Publikum dieser Zeit konnte viele Personen des öffentlichen Lebens im Roman wiedererkennen. Das Buch ist eine parodistische und romantische Geschichte des tragischen Antihelden Karls, seiner Herausforderungen, Abenteuer und Liebe. Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué (1777 - 1843) war einer der ersten deutschen Dichter der Romantik. Wilhelm Neumann, (1781-1834), war ein deutscher Lyriker, Erzähler, Kritiker, Herausgeber und Übersetzer sowie im Hauptberuf Beamter (Intendanturrat) im preußischen Kriegsministerium. August Ferdinand Bernhardi (1769-1820) war ein deutscher Sprachforscher und Schriftsteller. Karl August Varnhagen von Ense (1785-1858) war ein deutscher Chronist der Zeit der Romantik bis zur Revolution 1848 und zum anschließenden Jahrzehnt der Reaktion außerdem Erzähler, Biograph, Tagebuchschreiber und Diplomat.
