Dieses Buch ist ein altgriechisches literarisches Werk, das um die Mitte des 4. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. entstanden ist und den Philosophen Platon als seinen Autor nennt. Platon war sehr an Politik interessiert. Er war der Überzeugung, dass es zu den Aufgaben eines Philosophen gehöre, sich nicht nur theoretisch mit Fragen der Gesetzgebung, Verfassungslehre und Staatslenkung zu befassen, sondern auch bei sich bietender Gelegenheit beratend und gestaltend einzugreifen. In seiner Heimatstadt Athen sah er dafür keine Chance, da deren demokratische Verfassung für ein solches Vorhaben keine günstigen Voraussetzungen bot. Anders war die Lage in Syrakus, der bedeutendsten Stadt im griechisch besiedelten Teil Siziliens. Dem Text zufolge ist das Schreiben an eine Gruppe von sizilischen Griechen gerichtet, denen der Verfasser politischen Rat erteilt. Ausführlich erläutert und rechtfertigt der Brief Platons umstrittene Aktivitäten in Syrakus, die darauf abzielten, den tyrannisch regierten syrakusischen Stadtstaat nach philosophischen Grundsätzen zu reformieren. Der Verfasser schildert das katastrophale Scheitern dieses Vorhabens und versucht den Fehlschlag zu erklären. Außerdem behandelt er die Frage, wie philosophische Erkenntnisse zu erlangen und zu vermitteln sind. Diese Ausführungen sind offenbar für ein breiteres Lesepublikum bestimmt. Platon (428/427 v. Chr.-348/347 v. Chr.) war ein antiker griechischer Philosoph. Er war Schüler des Sokrates, dessen Denken und Methode er in vielen seiner Werke schilderte. Die Vielseitigkeit seiner Begabungen und die Originalität seiner wegweisenden Leistungen als Denker und Schriftsteller machten Platon zu einer der bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Persönlichkeiten der Geistesgeschichte.
