Tief unten durchs Ötztal zog ein fremder Wanderer. Oben in Adlershöhe über ihm am schwindelnden Abhang stand eine Mädchengestalt, von der Tiefe heraufgesehen nicht größer als eine Alpenrose, aber doch scharf sich abzeichnend vom lichtblauen Himmel und den leuchtenden Eisspitzen der Ferner. Fest und ruhig stand sie da, wie auch der Höhenwind an ihr riß und zerrte, und schaute nieder schwindellos in die Tiefe, wo die Ache brausend durch die Schlucht stürzte und ein schräger Sonnenstrahl in ihrem feinen Sprühregen schimmernde Prismen an die Felswand malte. Auch sie sah winzig klein den Wanderer und seinen Führer dahinziehen über den schmalen Steg, der in Turmeshöhe über die Ache führte und von da oben einem Strohhalm glich. Sie hörte nicht, was die beiden sprachen, denn aus der Tiefe drang kein Laut herauf als das donnernde Brausen des Wassers. Sie wurde nicht gewahr, daß der Führer, ein schmucker Gemsjäger, drohend den Arm erhob, zu ihr hinauf deutete und zu dem Fremden sagte: »Das is g'wiß die Geier-Wally, die dort oben steht, denn auf den schmalen Vorsprung, so nah an n' Abgrund, traut sich kei andres Madel; schauen's, ma meint, der Wind müßt' sie 'runterwehen, aber die tut immer's Gegenteil von dem, was jeder vernünftige Christenmensch tut.«
