Probably the most politically radical collection of poetry in the English language. In 'Songs of Innocence' Blake portrays humanity in an idyllic pastoral setting, full of naturalness and simplicity, but not immune from exploitation. In 'Songs of Experience' Blake portrays the world as it really is - full of social, economic, religious and sexual repression, managed by the institutions of the Church, the State, the monarchy and the rich. This edition re-prints the original final stanza of 'London' - which appears in Blake's notebook but which was left out of the original edition, because of its clear revolutionary meaning. If you enjoy this book, you might also be interested in Blake's 'Auguries of Innocence and Other Lyric Poems' - ISBN: 978-1495380877 - and Blake's 'Uncollected Lyric Poems and Epigrams' - ISBN: 978-1503216655.

A.E. Housman was one of the best-loved poets of his day, and A Shropshire Lad and Last Poems is a collection of poems whose elegant simplicity of form belies their hidden complexities. Housman's melodic and memorable poems have been popular for over a century. He writes typically of lost love, of the brevity of happiness, of young soldiers doomed to die. Admirers have found his work elegant and resonant; detractors have thought much of it mannered and glib. But Housman speaks with two voices: the smooth texts conceal a dark sub-text. This tormented and secretive man wrote poems alive with indirect self-disclosure. Check out our other books at www.dogstailbooks.co.uk

'The Conquest of Bread' is one of Kropotkin's most significant contributions to anarchist thought. He reviews past revolutions in France of 1789, 1848 and 1871, in an analysis that is faithful to their successes and their failures. He uses this analysis of the past to suggest how a revolution might achieve a truly free and genuinely egalitarian society in a spirit of anarchist-communist thought. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in anarchist thought and theory.

In Major Barbara, George Bernard Shaw spins out the drama of an eccentric millionaire, a ro-mantic poet, and a misguided savior of souls, Major Barbara herself, in a topsy-turvy master-piece of sophisticated banter and urbane humor. His brilliant dialogue, combined with his use of paradox and socialist theory, never fails to tickle, entertain-and challenge. George Bernard Shaw was the greatest British dramatist after Shakespeare, a satirist equal to Jonathan Swift, and a playwright whose most profound gift was his ability to make audiences think by provoking them to laughter.

Probably the best single collection by any individual British poet of the First World War in terms of consistency and sustained quality. Sassoon is detailed and moving in his depictions of the horrors of trench warfare, but equallly ferocious in his attacks on the British establishment who encouraged and supported the tactics which led to mass slaughter. A passionate and moving anti-war collection of poems! Check out our other books at www.dogstailbooks.co.uk

"It was considered an intrepid thing for Walter Besant to do when, twelve or thirteen years ago, he invaded the great East End of London and drew upon its unknown wealth of varied material to people that most charming novel, "All Sorts and Conditions of Men." Until then the West End knew little of its contiguous neighbor in the East. Dickens's kaleidoscopic views of low life in the South of London were manifestly caricatures of the slum specimens of human nature which he purposely sought and often distorted to suit his bizarre humor. Mr. Besant may be fairly considered as the pioneer of those who have since descended to the great unchartered region of East London, about which, so far as our knowledge of the existing conditions of human life in that community are concerned, we remained until, as it were yesterday, almost as ignorant as of the undiscovered territories in Central Africa. " So said the introduction to 'Tales of Mean Streets'. Morrison dared to go to places that Besant shunned and to describe the grim grittiness of the East End with verve and compassion.

The semi-autobiographical 'Martin Eden' is the most vital and original character Jack London ever created. Set in San Francisco, this is the story of Martin Eden, an impoverished seaman who pursues, obsessively and aggressively, dreams of education and literary fame. London, dissatisfied with the rewards of his own success, intended 'Martin Eden' as an attack on individualism and a criticism of ambition; however, much of its status as a classic has been conferred by admirers of its ambitious protagonist.

Gogol's works constitute one of Russian literature's supreme achievements, yet the nature of their brilliant originality, comic genius, and complex workings is difficult to summarize precisely. The Government Inspector, a perennial favourite on stage and screen, is considered a national institution in Russia, and Gogol's stories present us with one of the most marvellous worlds a writer has ever created. His quirky characters - the lowly official who imagines himself to be the King of Spain, the man committed to chase his nose around St. Petersburg, a whole village paralyzed at the prospect of being visited by an authority from the capital - are immortal. Although Gogol's fiction was commandeered by Russia's progressive critics as the work of an important social commentator, he was in many ways an arch-conservative, and there is a madcap strain in it that makes him a precursor of Kafka and absurdist drama.

Everyone has heard of Sherlock Holmes. Less well-known is Martin Hewitt, who uses logic and deduction to solve crimes. Arthur Morrison is more down-to-earth, more realistic than the world of Sherlock Holmes and Martin Hewitt is worthy of renewed interest.

First published in 1914, this collection contains the famous 'Poems of 1912-13' about Hardy's deceased wife. Thomas Hardy wrote in a great variety of poetic forms including lyrics, ballads, satire, dramatic monologues, and dialogue, and though in some ways a very traditional poet, because he was influenced by folk song and ballads, he "was never conventional," and "persistently experiment[ed] with different, often invented, stanza forms and metres and made use of "rough-hewn rhythms and colloquial diction". This is NOT a facsimile, but a modern edition.
