The first Ohio stories are part of the common story of the wonderful Ice Age, when a frozen deluge pushed down from the north, and covered a vast part of the earth's surface with slowly moving glaciers. The traces that this age left in Ohio are much the same as it left elsewhere, and the signs that there were people here ten thousand years ago, when the glaciers began to melt and the land became fit to live in again, are such as have been found in the glacier drift in many other countries.

The Country Printer: An Essay is a book written by William Dean Howells and published in 1896. The book is an essay that explores the life of a country printer in the United States during the 19th century. Howells uses his own experience as a printer's apprentice to provide insight into the daily routines and challenges faced by printers in small towns and rural areas. The book delves into the history of printing, including the development of the printing press and the role of printing in spreading knowledge and information. Howells also discusses the impact of technology on the printing industry, particularly the rise of the steam press and its effect on the traditional craft of letterpress printing. Throughout the book, Howells emphasizes the importance of the printer in rural communities, as they were often the only source of printed materials, including newspapers, books, and pamphlets. He also explores the relationship between printers and their customers, who relied on them for everything from wedding invitations to legal documents. Overall, The Country Printer: An Essay provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of printing in the late 19th century, and offers a unique perspective on the role of printers in American society. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The Lady of the Aroostook is a novel written by William Dean Howells, an American author and literary critic, first published in 1879. The book tells the story of a young woman named Marcia Gaylord, who travels from Boston to the Aroostook region of Maine with her mother for a summer vacation. While there, she meets and falls in love with a young man named Richard Durgin, who works as a lumberjack. The novel explores the themes of class and social status, as Marcia comes from a wealthy family and Richard is a working-class man. It also examines the cultural differences between Boston and the rural Aroostook region. As Marcia and Richard's relationship develops, they face obstacles from Marcia's mother, who disapproves of their relationship, and from Richard's own insecurities about his social status.Throughout the novel, Howells uses vivid descriptions of the natural beauty of Maine to contrast with the artificiality of Boston society. The Lady of the Aroostook is considered a classic of American literature, and Howells is known for his realistic portrayals of everyday life and social issues in his writing.""I don't go round criticisn' my superior officers, and I don't say anything about the responsibility the old man took. The old man's all right, accordin' to his lights; he ain't had a tiger in the family. But if that chap was to fall overboard, --well, I don't know how long it would take to lower a boat, if I was to listen to my conscience. There ain't really any help for him. He's begun too young ever to get over it. He won't be ashore at Try-East an hour before he's drunk. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. It is hard to know the child's own earliest recollections from the things it has been told of itself by those with whom its life began. They remember for it the past which it afterward seems to remember for itself; the wavering outline of its nature is shadowed against the background of family, and from this it imagines an individual existence which has not yet begun. The events then have the quality of things dreamt, not lived, and they remain of that impalpable and elusive quality in all the after years. William Dean Howells was an American realist novelist, literary critic, and playwright, nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters". He was particularly known for his tenure as editor of The Atlantic Monthly, as well as for his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day" and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. William Dean Howells was born on March 1, 1837, in Martinsville, Ohio (now known as Martins Ferry, Ohio), to William Cooper Howells and Mary Dean Howells, the second of eight children. His father was a newspaper editor and printer who moved frequently around Ohio. In 1840, the family settled in Hamilton, Ohio, where his father oversaw a Whig newspaper and followed Swedenborgianism. Their nine years there were the longest period that they stayed in one place. The family had to live frugally, although the young Howells was encouraged by his parents in his literary interests. He began at an early age to help his father with typesetting and printing work, a job known at the time as a printer's devil. In 1852, his father arranged to have one of his poems published in the Ohio State Journal without telling him.

From his place on the floor of the Hemenway Gymnasium Mr. Elbridge G. Mavering looked on at the Class Day gaiety with the advantage which his stature, gave him over most people there. Hundreds of these were pretty girls, in a great variety of charming costumes, such as the eclecticism of modern fashion permits, and all sorts of ingenious compromises between walking dress and ball dress.

""A Hazard of New Fortunes V4"" is a novel written by William Dean Howells. It is the fourth volume in a series of novels that follow the lives of several characters in New York City during the late 19th century. The story revolves around the struggles of the newly rich and the established upper class as they navigate the complexities of American society. The main character, Basil March, is a journalist who becomes embroiled in the lives of the wealthy Dryfoos family. As he tries to help them navigate their way through the social and economic challenges of the time, he is forced to confront his own beliefs and values. The novel is a commentary on the changing face of America during this period, and explores themes of class, wealth, power, and morality. It is a thought-provoking and insightful work that offers a unique perspective on American society during the Gilded Age.First and last, the Marches did a good deal of travel on the Elevated roads, which, he said, gave you such glimpses of material aspects in the city as some violent invasion of others' lives might afford in human nature. Once, when the impulse of adventure was very strong in them, they went quite the length of the West Side lines, and saw the city pushing its way by irregular advances into the country. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. ""A Hazard of New Fortunes"" is a novel written by William Dean Howells and published in 1890. It is the third volume in the series and continues the story of Basil March and his family as they navigate their way through the complexities of life in New York City during the late 19th century. The novel explores themes of social class, wealth, and the struggle for power and influence in a rapidly changing society. The March family faces challenges from both within and outside their social circle, as they try to maintain their position while also seeking to improve their fortunes. Along the way, they encounter a cast of characters from all walks of life, including working-class laborers, wealthy businessmen, and ambitious politicians. With its vivid descriptions of life in turn-of-the-century New York, ""A Hazard of New Fortunes"" is a fascinating portrait of a society in transition, and a compelling tale of one family's struggle to find their place in it.It was clear to Beaton that Dryfoos distrusted him; and the fact heightened his pleasure in Christine's liking for him. He was as sure of this as he was of the other, though he was not so sure of any reason for his pleasure in it. She had her charm; the charm of wildness to which a certain wildness in himself responded; and there were times when his fancy contrived a common future for them. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. This is Volume 1 of the novel, which was originally published in two volumes.Arnus Beaton's studio looked at first glance like many other painters' studios. A gray wall quadrangularly vaulted to a large north light; casts of feet, hands, faces hung to nails about; prints, sketches in oil and water-color stuck here and there lower down; a rickety table, with paint and palettes and bottles of varnish and siccative tossed comfortlessly on it; an easel, with a strip of some faded mediaeval silk trailing from it; a lay figure simpering in incomplete nakedness. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. In those dim recesses of the consciousness where things have their beginning, if ever things have a beginning, I suppose the origin of this novel may be traced to a fact of a fortnight's sojourn on the western shore of lake Champlain in the summer of 1891. Across the water in the State of Vermont I had constantly before my eyes a majestic mountain form which the earlier French pioneers had named "Le Lion Couchant," but which their plainer-minded Yankee successors preferred to call "The Camel's Hump." It really looked like a sleeping lion; the head was especially definite; and when, in the course of some ten years, I found the scheme for a story about a summer hotel which I had long meant to write, this image suggested the name of 'The Landlord at Lion's Head.' I gave the title to my unwritten novel at once and never wished to change it, but rejoiced in the certainty that, whatever the novel turned out to be, the title could not be better. I began to write the story four years later, when we were settled for the winter in our flat on Central Park, and as I was a year in doing it, with other things, I must have taken the unfinished manuscript to and from Magnolia, Massachusetts, and Long Beach, Long Island, where I spent the following summer. It was first serialized in Harper's Weekly and in the London Illustrated News, as well as in an Australian newspaper-I forget which one; and it was published as a completed book in 1896.

The forty-sixth annual fair of the Pymantoning County Agricultural Society was in its second day. The trotting-matches had begun, and the vast majority of the visitors had abandoned the other features of the exhibition for this supreme attraction. They clustered four or five deep along the half-mile of railing that enclosed the track, and sat sweltering in the hot September sun, on the benching of the grandstand that flanked a stretch of the course. Boys selling lemonade and peanuts, and other boys with the score of the races, made their way up and down the seats with shrill cries; now and then there was a shriek of girls' laughter from a group of young people calling to some other group, or struggling for a programme caught back and forth; the young fellows shouted to each other jokes that were lost in mid-air; but, for the most part, the crowd was a very silent one, grimly intent upon the rival sulkies as they flashed by and lost themselves in the clouds that thickened over the distances of the long, dusty loop. Here and there some one gave a shout as a horse broke, or settled down to his work under the guttural snarl of his driver; at times the whole throng burst into impartial applause as a horse gained or lost a length; but the quick throb of the hoofs on the velvety earth and the whir of the flying wheels were the sounds that chiefly made themselves heard.
