The Crisis is a historical novel by Winston Churchill. The novel is set in St. Louis, Missouri, in the years leading up to the first battles of the American Civil War, and follows the story of Stephen Brice, a man with Union and abolitionist sympathies, and his involvement with a Southern family. The novel focuses on the romantic tension between four main characters: Virginia Carvel, a fashionable Southern woman, Clarence Colfax, her cousin who becomes a stalwart cavalier in the Southern cause, Stephen Brice, an earnest young lawyer from Boston with Union sympathies, and Eliphalet Hopper, a hard-working clerk with ambitions to advance himself financially and socially. The crisis of the title is provoked by Abraham Lincoln's opposition to the extension of slavery, and the power of his personal integrity to win people to his cause, including Stephen Brice, who becomes a devoted admirer and proponent after a personal interview with Lincoln on the eve of the Freeport debate. The novel is essentially a story about Lincoln, as his philosophy is a dynamic presence throughout the story.

Winston Churchill wrote a short fiction titled "Dr. Jonathan". The narrative takes place in a tiny New England town and centers on the persona of Dr. Jonathan, a well-respected and popular doctor in the neighborhood. Dr. Jonathan is first introduced, along with his daily schedule of seeing patients and catering to their medical requirements. Dr. Jonathan always has time to stop and chat with the residents of the town, who respect and appreciate him despite his hectic schedule. One day, Mary, a young lady, visits Dr. Jonathan to get help for her chronic cough. Dr. Jonathan recognizes right once that Mary has TB and that her illness is fatal. Nevertheless, he assures her that she will get better and gives her a prescription for a drug that he is aware won't help her. Dr. Jonathan stays in touch with Mary throughout the next weeks, providing her both consolation and encouragement as she declines. The villagers start to worry that something is wrong, and some even call Dr. Jonathan a quack physician. Mary ultimately dies, and Dr. Jonathan is left regretting giving her false hope. He considers his duties as a doctor and understands that they include not just treating patients but also educating them. Overall, "Dr. Jonathan" is a moving tale that examines the moral conundrums that confront doctors and the significance of honesty and integrity in the medical industry.

Crocker spends his summers at Asquith, a fictitious lakeside resort. He is surprised to see his old friend the Celebrity, who has also decided to vacation in Asquith. The Celebrity has decided to travel incognito in order to lessen the burden of his celebrity. He goes by the name Charles Wrexell Allen, which he stole from a man in Boston who resembles the Celebrity enough to be his doppelganger. Farquhar Fenelon Cooke, a wealthy Philadelphian who is buying up timber lands in the area, is another newcomer to Asquith. He's too loud and unrefined for stuffy old Asquith, and he parties too hard, so he decides to build his own resort nearby called Mohair. The two gentlemen start courting two beautiful women.
