Eine ungewöhnliche Liebe gerät in das machtpolitische Räderwerk ihrer Zeit: Es ist die Liebe zwischen der sarazenischen Königin Arabel und dem christlichen Ritter und Markgrafen Willehalm, der in Arabien gefangen gehalten wird. Der alte Titurel übergibt die Pflege des Grals seinem Sohne Frimutel, von dessen fünf Kindern Anfortas und Trevrezent sich schon Waffenruhm erwarben; die Töchter sind Schoisiane, Herzeleide und Repanse de Schoie. Schoisiane wird dem Herzogen Kiot von Katelangen (Katalonien) vermählt, stirbt aber bei der Geburt Sigunens. Vor Leid begibt sich Kiot nebst seinem Bruder Manfiolot des Schwertes; sein anderer Bruder Tampentär, König von Brobarz, von dem Kiot sein Herzogtum zu Lehen trägt, leiht es nun Sigunen und nimmt diese zu sich, um sie mit seiner Tochter Kondwiramur zu erziehen. Herzeleide wird mit Kastis vermählt, der am Hochzeitstage stirbt und ihr die Königreiche Waleis und Norgals hinterlässt, welche sie ihrem zweiten Gemahl, Gahmuret, zubringt. Nach Tampentärs Tode, dem Kardeiß in Brobarz folgt, wird Sigune, auf Herzeleidens Bitte, zu dieser gebracht und mit Schionatulander bei ihr erzogen. Diesen jungen Delfin (Dauphin) von Graswaldane (Graisivaudan, Viennois oder Dauphinée), den Helden der Aventüre, hatte die Königin Anflise von Frankreich, Gahmurets Jugendgeleibte, diesem anvertraut. Sein Ahn war Gurnemans de Graharz, sein Vater Gurzgri, seine Mutter Mahaute, des Pfalzgrafen Eckunat Schwester. Schionatulander hatte Gahmureten oft als Bote bei Anflisen gedient; jetzt ward er selber von Sigunens Minne berührt. Er bittet um ihre Hilfe, und ein reizendes Gespräch über Minne entspinnt sich zwischen den Kindern. Sigune ist ihm hold, doch soll die Schionatulander erst unter Schildesdach verdienen. Um diese Zeit zieht Gahmuret zum andern Mal nach dem Morgenlande, dem Baruch gegen die babylonischen Brüder beizustehen; Schionatulander begleitet ihn, beginnt aber dort aus Sehnsucht nach Sigunen zu siechen. Gahmuret, der seinen Kummer bemerkt, stellt ihn zur Rede und verheißt ihm, als er seine Liebe zu Sigunen bekennt, Beistand und Fürsprache. Ein ähnliches Zwiegespräch zwischen Sigunen und Herzeleiden beschließt den wahrscheinlich ganz erhaltenen Abschnitt.

Wolfram's Parzival continues to inspire and influence, in modern times works as diverse as Wagner's Parsifal and Lohengrin, Franz Kafka's The Castle, Terry Gilliam's film The Fisher King, and Umberto Eco's Baudolino.Vast in its scope, incomparably dense in its imagery, Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival ranks alongside Dante's Divine Comedy as one of the foremost narrative works to emerge from medieval Europe. This book is a newtranslation of Parzival, together with the fragments of the Titurel, an elegiac offshoot of Parzival, and the nine love-songs attributed to Wolfram. Parzival is the greatest of the medieval Grail romances. In its depth and complexity of characterisation this work of the early thirteenth century anticipates the modern novel. It encompasses deeds of chivalry, tournaments and sieges, courtly love, and other erotic undertakings, but also sin and penance, and a deeply moving study in depression. Centre stage are the Grail Castle and Arthur's Round Table, but the pagan world of the Orient also is also reflected. Parzival has inspired and influenced works as diverse as Wagner's Parsifal and Lohengrin, Franz Kafka's The Castle, Terry Gilliam's film The Fisher King, and Umberto Eco's Baudolino. Cyril Edwards' thoughtful translation vividlyconveys the power of this complex, wide-ranging medieval masterpiece. CYRIL EDWARDS is a lecturer in German at St Peter's College and Research Fellow of the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, University of Oxford. He is the author of The Beginnings of German Literature (Camden House, 2002), and numerous articles on the medieval lyric and Old High German. His previous translations include Hans Sachs's "e;Song of the Nose"e; for the King's Singers, Bernhard Maier's Dictionary of Celtic Religion and Culture (Boydell & Brewer, 1997) and The Medieval Housebook (Prestel-Verlag, 1997).

Der mittelhochdeutsche 'Parzival' (ca. 1200/1210) gehrt zur Weltliteratur. Auf kunstvolle Weise verbindet Wolframs Roman den Artus- mit dem Gralsstoff und entfaltet ein handlungs- und figurenreiches Panorama der ritterlich-hfischen Kultur des Mittelalters. Im Mittelpunkt der Erzhlung steht Parzival, der nach verschiedenen Stationen des Scheiterns und Versagens schlielich den leidenden Gralknig Anfortas durch die Mitleidsfrage erlst und auf der Gralsburg Munsalvaesche die Herrschaft antritt. Die zweite Auflage bietet unverndert den mageblichen Text nach Karl Lachmann und die hoch gelobte bersetzung von Peter Knecht. Als Neuerung enthlt sie eine konzise Einfuhrung in grundlegende Editions- und Interpretationsprobleme von Bernd Schirok.

Die ATB ist die traditionsreichste Editionsreihe der germanistischen Mediavistik. Begrundet 1881 von Hermann Paul, wurde sie von fuhrenden Fachvertretern, Georg Baesecke, Hugo Kuhn, Burghart Wachinger, betreut. Seit 2001 liegt die Verantwortung in den Handen von Christian Kiening. Die mittlerweile etwa 120 Bande verknupfen exemplarisch Handschriftennahe und Lesbarkeit, wissenschaftliche Arbeit am Text und Blick auf die akademische Lehre. Sie umfassen anerkannte, zum Teil kommentierte Ausgaben klassischer' Autoren der Zeit um 1200, aber auch veritable Werkausgaben (Notker der Deutsche) und anspruchsvolle Neueditionen (Eckenlied, Heinrich von dem Turlin).

Parzival is the greatest of the medieval Grail romances. It tells of Parzival's growth from youthful folly to knighthood at the court of King Arthur, and of his quest for the Holy Grail. Cyril Edwards's fine translation also includes the fragments of Titurel, an elegiac offshoot of Parzival.

Diese neue Ausgabe der beiden 'Titurel'-Bruchstucke Wolframs von Eschenbach prasentiert eine Text-Fassung nach der Hs. G, der ein umfangreicher Herausgeberapparat sowie ein vollstandiger Variantenapparat beigegeben ist. Dem schwierigen Text ist eine neuhochdeutsche Ubersetzung gegenuber gestellt, die als eine erste Verstehenshilfe auf den mittelhochdeutschen Text hinfuhren soll. Ein ausfuhrlicher Stellenkommentar erschliet durch Verweise auf die Forschung und durch Interpretationshinweise den Problemgehalt und die Perspektivenvielfalt des Wolfram'schen Werkes. Einleitende Darstellungen zu Uberlieferung, Metrik und Editionsprinzipien, eine Bibliographie, Namensregister, ein vollstandiger diplomatischer Abdruck der stark luckenhaften Handschrift M, eine Transkription der moglicherweise auf Wolfram zuruckgehenden Melodie sowie Faksimileseiten komplettieren den Band.
