Les montagnes du Caucase sont depuis longtemps enclavées dans l'empire de Russie sans lui appartenir. Leurs féroces habitants, séparés par le langage et par des intérêts divers, forment un grand nombre de petites peuplades, qui ont peu de relations politiques entre elles, mais qui sont toutes animées par le même amour de l'indépendance et du pillage. Une des plus nombreuses et des plus redoutables est celle des Tchetchenges, qui habitent la grande et la petite Kabarda, provinces dont les hautes vallées s'étendent jusqu'aux sommités du Caucase. Les boumes en sont beaux, courageux, intelligents, mais voleurs et cruels, et dans un état de guerre presque continuel avec les troupes de la ligne. C'est au milieu de ces bordes dangereuses et au centre même de cette immense chaîne de montagnes que la Russie a établie un chemin de communication avec ses possessions d'Asie. Des redoutes placées de distance en distance, assurent la route jusqu'en Géorgie; mais aucun voyageur n'oserait se hasarder à parcourir seul l'espace qui les sépare. Deux fois par semaine, un convoi d'infanterie, avec du canon et un parti considérable de Cosaques, escorte les voyageurs et les dépêches du gouvernement. Une de ces redoutes, située au débouché des montagnes, est devenue une petite bourgade assez peuplée. Sa situation lui a fait donner le nom de Wladi-Caucase: elle sert de résidence au commandant des troupes qui font le pénible service dont il vient d'être parlé...

Le courage d'une jeune fille qui, vers la fin du règne de Paul Ier, partit à pied de la Sibérie, pour venir à Saint-Pétersbourg demander la grâce de son père, fit assez de bruit dans le temps pour engager un auteur célèbre à faire une héroïne de roman de cette intéressante voyageuse. Mais les personnes qui l'ont connue paraissent regretter qu'on ait prêté des aventures d'amour et des idées romanesques à une jeune et noble vierge qui n'eut jamais d'autre passion que l'amour filial le plus pur, et qui, sans appui, sans conseil, trouva dans son coeur la pensée de l'action la plus généreuse et la force de l'exécuter. Si le récit de ses aventures n'offre point cet intérêt de surprise que peut inspirer un romancier pour des personnages imaginaires, on ne lira peut-être pas sans quelque plaisir la simple histoire de sa vie, assez intéressante par elle-même, sans autre ornement que la vérité...
