- This first critical catalog of Jean Fautrier's paintings- Accompanies an exhibition at Christie's in Paris in February 2023Jean Fautrier (1989-1964) was a major 20th century artist. Trained at the Royal Academy of Arts and influenced by J.M.W. Turner, he was quickly noticed by the collector Jeanne Castel in 1923. At first, his style was figurative and played on contrasts of light. He expertly harnessed the essence of reality in order to transfigure it, redefining the genres of landscape painting, still lifes and nudes (especially in his series of dark works) during the inter-war period. A few years later, his approach underwent a radical shift and became much more abstract. He launched the "Informalist" art movement, playing with pictorial materials and combining different substances to create visions of an extraordinary material quality. Close to the great intellectual figures of his time, including Jean Paulhan, Paul Éluard, Francis Ponge, René Char and André Malraux, Fautrier never ceased producing remarkably powerful and politically resonant works, as is attested by his major series Otages (1943-1945), Objets (1947-1948) and Partisans (1956). In 1960, he was awarded the first prize for painting at the Venice Biennale. Boasting an exceptionally exhaustive iconography, this first ever comprehensive annotated catalogue of Jean Fautrier's paintings includes the technique, origin, exhibitions and bibliography for each work. It is supplemented with a detailed biography, technical analyses and authoritative scientific texts, as well as transcriptions of interviews and radio broadcasts from Fautrier's time.

This beautifully produced book by New York-based conceptual artist Barbara Bloom (born 1951) explores the nature of gifts in relation to aspects such as wrapping, covering and uncovering, pleasure and generosity. A passionate collector of ornamental paper from all over the world, Bloom has studied the history and aesthetics of gift-wrapping in detail. In Gifts, she tries to blur the conventional distinction between art and life while offering new insights on notions of concealment and revelation, drawing on various historical examples. "Can the box be an artwork? Can the wrapping be the gift?" she asks her readers. Bloom's work has been shown internationally, including exhibitions at the Venice Biennale and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gifts is a further step in the artist's personal investigation into the world of objects, itself a gorgeously produced object ripe for gift giving. This book compiles the most recent work by Luc Tuymans (born 1958), one of Belgium's most eminent painters. Accompanying a 2015 exhibition, Luc Tuymans: Birds of a Feather, it shows the artist's fascination with the Scottish Enlightenment and its thinkers, who believed in the ability of humans to shape their future rationally and whose influence extended as far as the US. Stimulated by a visit to the art collection of the University of Edinburgh, Tuymans created three small portraits of Scottish philosophers, originally painted by the 18th-century portrait artist Henry Raeburn. The theme of the Enlightenment is combined with menacing horror, such as in a monumental dark work, "The Shore," which alludes to Goya's pinturas negras, or in the portrait of the murderer and cannibal Issei Sagawa. Acclaimed British novelist Will Self provides a remarkable short story for the publication, while art critic Colin Chinnery contributes an explanatory essay.
