I spent the better part of the last thirty-six years attempting to have short stories, poetry, children's stories, or nonsense literature published to no avail. So now that I am a retired man that spent thirtysix years working to protect public health, I will be again testing the waters endeavoring to have my written word published. The stories, most of the time, were based on true occurrences. The jokes and stories could be told in mixed company and in front of children. However, those were the days of Jack Benny and Red Skelton, when four-letter words were not needed constantly to create humor. My poetry and nonsense will be scattered among my tales and book chapters. Relax and enjoy yourself. I did writing it.

You see, Hackleburg Methodist Church is a fictional congregation in rural Indiana, and through the years it's given us characters such as: Marybele Hasselbaum, the head of the Women's Society of Christian Service, who kept everything running smoothly until she unexpectedly died at 82, without a hand-picked successor Lush Larkin, former saloon owner who once was lost but was gloriously found (owner of Susanna, the Methodist dog.) Aunt Minnie Rittenhouse, who shepherded the Jesus' Little Sunbeams class by reading from the Big Blue Bible Story Book and allowing some normal creative destruction. Members of the Hackleburg Church Choir, who sang joyfully, if not always on key. In the history of the Hackleburg church, we also hear of 13-pie potlucks (the loaves and fishes potlucks during hard times); weather-dependent picnics; rivalries with the Baptists; Methodist cuss words, like "heavens to Betsey" and fizzle-fazzle," and the grace of God, which seemed to get those Hoosier Methodist through every trail-still speaking to each other (most of the time).
Nancy McDaniel has been Aglow International's Prayer Director since 1999. She has traveled in over 40 nations carrying the message of the power of prayer to bring heaven's atmosphere to earth. Albert J. Wollen wrote a quote stating that every Christian can enjoy "constant, conscious communion with God," Being aware of God's presence in your life moment by moment, worshipping Him and talking with Him all the time in a practical, thoughtful way. Prayer is a primary way we walk in fellowhip with God. It is that fellowship and anoiting that causes our prayers to be aligned with heaven.
Dr. Dixie Benshoff Ludick is a well-trained psychologist and teacher -see drdixiebenshoff.com. What she was not prepared for was being a mother to a little boy with a very vivid imagination and a surplus of self-confidence. When it came time for kindergarten David politely declined, assuring his mother that being a pirate was all the educational opportunity he would ever need. Besides, Bunker his dog and constant companion had not done especially well at obedience training, and that was all that David needed to know about the subject of school. Thank you very much. In addition to immersing himself in the world of pirates David loved it when his mother read to him, and he desperately wanted to be able to read independently. Capitalizing on both his favorite things to do, Dixie wrote this book to let David know that in the hands of the right teacher school can enrich your life experience and inspire young pirates to set sail for unchartered destinations. Dixie turned to her friend Nancy Gabalac whom she had met in graduate school. They had this in common: both had mothers who were teachers; both were married to attorneys; both held a successful career in the counseling profession; both believed in compassionate service to the disabled and both struggled to assert themselves during a time in history when women did not do so. Most importantly, both were trying very hard to balance these roles and not shortchange their children whom they were unquestionably devoted to. Oh, there was one more thing: they both had an intense appreciation for the arts- Dixie studied literature and Nancy studied art. And so David Was a Pirate is their attempt to pay homage to their own mothers and to the teaching profession, but most importantly reassure all children that life can be an awfully exciting adventure when you take charge of it!
Twins have a very unique relationship. They often know exactly what the other one is thinking before anything is said. Usually, one is more adventurous than the other, but I'm not sure if that is true with identical twins Adam and Luke. As DC Duck recalls one incident the twins were involved in, both boys appear to be a bit mischievous.
