This practical book provides fundamentals of EM propagation electromagnetic wave propagation and its unique application for the design of mobile wireless systems in complex urban environments. It supplies telecommunication engineers with the proper theoretical and practical tools to: plan radio coverage in cellular networks; design a radio link; predict connectivity in a wireless network and ensure that the system to be designed fulfills regulations on exposure of general public to electromagnetic fields. The book brings theory, algorithms, and applications into focus with some practical examples. Specific attention is devoted to laying the mathematical foundations of the asymptotic techniques that are presented; of the propagation over a flat and spherical Earth; and also of the propagation in complex environment in order to provide a cohesive exposition of the underlying principles. You'll be shown the latest propagation models and be equipped to understand and address the unique challenges facing wireless propagation for the most recent 5G mobile systems, including how to cope with new propagation scenarios/frequencies in 5G wireless channel modelling. You'll also find unique coverage of the problems of human exposure to electromagnetic fields and the corresponding international and national regulations, including the most recent ICNIRP guidelines. With its strong theoretical background on fundamentals of electromagnetic propagation along with an application-oriented approach, this is a must-have book for researchers working on applied electromagnetics and engineers working on wireless network planning at an advanced level. It is also rich in details and clear, making it an excellent textbook for advanced and graduate-level students.

This book shows you how to develop a hybrid mm-wave chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system, which includes chipless tag, reader hardware, and detection algorithm that use image processing and machine learning (ML) techniques. It provides the background and information you need to apply the concepts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into detection and chipless tag signature printable on normal plastic substrates, instead of the conventional peak/nulls in the frequency tags. You'll learn how to incorporate new AI detection techniques along with cloud computing to lower costs. You'll also be shown a cost-effective means of image construction, which can lower detection errors. The book focuses on side-looking-aperture-radar (SLAR) with a combination of deep learning to provide a much safer means of chipless detection than the current inverse synthetic-aperture radar (iSAR) techniques. Each chapter includes practical examples of design, and a QA section to answer the possible doubts in simpler phrases. With its emphasis on mm-wave band and the practical side of design and engineering of the chipless tags, reader, and detection algorithms, this is an excellent resource for industry engineers, design engineers and university researchers.

Plasmonic optical biosensors allow label-free and highly sensitive detection of analytes, usually within a dedicated microfluidic system that brings the sample to the biosensor surface. Since the nineties, an optical fiber counterpart to the bulky Kretschmann prism configuration implemented in most commercial systems is investigated and developed to allow in situ measurements with a miniaturized system. Thanks to straightforward light injection and considering the optical fiber geometry, such developments indeed allow remote operation in very small volumes of analytes of the order of 10 µL or even less. The plasmonic optical fiber technology is now mature to such a degree that it becomes to be industrialized. Various configurations comprising unclad/etched multimode optical fibers, D-shaped fibers, U-bent fibers, interferometers, and optical fiber gratings (tilted and long period fiber gratings) were reported. When combined with thin metal films or nanoparticles and functionalized with antibodies, aptamers or other relevant bioreceptors, they show unprecedented performance in terms of sensitivity and limit of detection. Also, the target applications are ever growing, covering biomedical sensing, environmental sensing, and food quality monitoring, among others. This will be a great resource for photonics Engineers and Bioengineers (Industrial engineers and researchers.
