"After months of auditioning I am very proud to announce that I am a member of The Actors Studio. The greatest school of the theater. It houses great people like Marlon Brando, Julie Harris, Arthur Kennedy, Elia Kazan..." Unpublished James Dean letter to Winslow family-Summer 1952James Dean, Fairmount, Indiana & Farming: Conversations with Marcus Winslow tells the story of James Dean and the Midwestern family that raised him through the eyes of the boy who thought of him as an older brother, more than a cousin. When East of Eden was released in early 1955, James Dean instantly became a star, but tragically he died before Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956) solidifi ed that stardom. Coupled with never-before published letters and a treasure trove of photographs, Marcus recalls Dean and the farm and the fans and how Jimmie's incandescent fame changed the lives of the Winslow family and his hometown forever. Marcus Winslow is the President of James Dean, Inc. and still lives on the family farm where Dean was raised. Leith Adams retired from Warner Bros. in 2013 and was co-editor of James Dean: Behind the Scene (1990).

  • - The Biography of Andy Gibb
    af Matthew Hild
    297,95 kr.

Andy Gibb was one of the biggest pop stars of the disco era. His first three singles--"I Just Want To Be Your Everything," "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water," and "Shadow Dancing"--reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 during 1977-78, and he became a fixture on television specials, appearing alongside legends such as Bob Hope, George Burns, and Dean Martin. In 1981, he became the co-host of the iconic Solid Gold television series, and a year later he starred in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on Broadway. But despite his enormous success, he battled with insecurity, depression, and substance abuse, causing his career to flounder and leaving him bankrupt by 1987. By then, he seemed ready to start anew and launch a comeback, but he died suddenly in 1988, five days after his thirtieth birthday.Despite the tragic brevity of his career and life, Andy Gibb still has a strong fan base around the world, but his story has never been told--until now. Arrow Through the Heart: The Biography of Andy Gibb draws upon extensive research, rare archival interviews with Andy Gibb and members of his family, and interviews conducted by the author with nearly fifty of Andy's friends and associates to examine the life and career of this beloved pop idol.

Paterson, New Jersey-March 1961. A joyous day of celebration turns into a waking nightmare when a young girl is brutally murdered. With the police making slow progress, the child's grief-stricken parents decide to launch their own investigation and uncover some ugly secrets about their family, friends, and neighbors. Among the many possible suspects, the most likely culprit proves to be the girl's own sister... but could an angelic-looking child be capable of such a ghastly crime?Originally titled Communion but also known by such monikers as Alice, Sweet Alice and Holy Terror, Alfred Sole's Catholic-themed horror-thriller has gone on to attract a well-deserved cult following. Though mostly ignored on its original, checkered theatrical release, the film is now revered among devotees of the offbeat. Architect-turned-filmmaker Alfred Sole brought a distinctive, artistic eye to bear on what could have been yet another routine potboiler. Working well outside the confines of Hollywood, he used his connections to secure atmospheric locations, while scouring the New York theater scene for the right actors to bring his quirky characters to life. The road to realizing his vision was not without complications, however. Here you will learn about his ill-fated foray into the then-profitable "porno chic" market by making his own "blue movie" in his home town; the fallout was immense and he found himself facing the possibility of jail time as well as absolute professional disgrace. Once the dust settled, he decided to try for something equally commercial but far more palatable for mainstream consumption. At a time when the likes of Tobe Hooper, George A. Romero, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, and David Cronenberg were emerging as the great new auteurs of North American horror, Alfred Sole seemed poised to join their ranks; sadly, some bad breaks ensured that lightning would not strike twice. No matter what disappointments came in its wake, Sole's "respectable" mainstream debut scaled artistic heights that leave no doubts as to his singular talents. Troy Howarth, the award-nominated author of such books as The Haunted World of Mario Bava and Assault on the System: The Nonconformist Cinema of John Carpenter, explores the genesis, production, and reception of one of the key horror films of the 1970s. In addition to a brand new, in-depth career-encompassing interview with co-writer/director Alfred Sole, Unholy Communion: Alice, Sweet Alice from Script to Screen also reproduces the complete original shooting screenplay. There's also ample analysis of the state of the genre during the counter-culture boom of the late 1960s and '70s and of the film itself, giving readers insight into what makes this such a special, stand-out piece of independent filmmaking.

FROM HELL TO HOLLYWOOD: An Encyclopedia of Warld War II Films offers the most comprehensive illustrated guide ever assembled for theatrical motion-pictures, English-language and international, dealing with the conflict that consumed America and the globe during the mid-20th century. Though United States official involvement did not begin until December, 1941, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan’s imperial air force, early battles and other precipitous moments, which led to legendary conflicts in Europe and the Pacific, can be traced back through the better part of a decade, many deriving from the unsatisfactory treaties that ended the initial Great War. This book also addresses WWII’s aftermath in America, Asia, and Europe, as varied filmmakers have portrayed that difficult period. In a unique approach to this complex, broad subject, specific films are grouped according to unifying themes that involve varied aspects of ‘The Big Picture.’ These range from training of civilians for a new, updated state-of-the-art armed forces to the impact of warfare on the development of commercial flight, also the unique roles played by spies, People’s Armies, and other misunderstood aspects of the war as writers and directors perceived them then, as well as more recent Revisionist portrayals.Included are hundreds of vivid photos, many never before printed in book form. This work is so immense that it had to be presented in two inter-dependent volumes—a first for Bear Manor Media!  This is volume 2 of 2.DOUGLAS BRODE is a screenwriter, novelist, graphic novelist, produced playwright, multi-award winning journalist, and multi-award winning educator. He created and taught the Film Classics program for The Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University until his retirement. Now Brode concentrates on turning out further books, both fiction and non-fiction. These include Deadlier Than the Male: Femme Fatales in 1960s and 1970s Cinema for Bear Manor Media.

D.J. MacHale's Are You Afraid of the Dark? was the Twilight Zone for kids and teens growing up in the 90s, and for those who embraced the show's mix of dark chills and out-there scenarios, it has lingered in their memories way past the seven-year run on TV. The series not only constantly pushed the envelope as to what was acceptable for scary TV for children, but also gave future celebrities like Ryan Gosling (Drive, La La Land), Neve Campbell (Scream, Party of Five), Jay Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon, This Is The End), and Hayden Christensen (Star Wars Episode 1-3) their start!

This two-volume set (Part 1 and Part B) covers the entire 70+ year history of MAD magazine. Part 1 covers from when Max C. Gaines ventured into comic book publishing in the 1930s and eventually founded E.C. Comics. E.C. started out publishing titles for small children and Bible stories, but after an unfortunate accident, son William M. Gaines took over and created legendary comic book titles such as Tales from the Crypt and Weird Science. Bill Gaines hired Harvey Kurtzman who created Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. Kurtzman wanted to increase his income, Gaines suggested adding a humor title and in 1952, MAD was born. In 1956, Kurtzman left and was replaced by former Crypt Editor, Al Feldstein. The story carries on through Feldstein's 30-year tenure as the Editor of MAD. Featuring exclusive interviews with director Brian DePalma, stars Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Nancy Allen, Amy Irving, William Katt, P.J. Soles and more; writers Stephen King and Lawrence D. Cohen and a host of others including the late Bill Paxton who worked on the film alongside art director Jack Fisk (who also features), Like Being On Mars is a lovingly curated oral history of the horror classic Carrie (1976). Loaded with powerful insight and images that truly deliver an in depth and inside look at the creative process and the final execution of one of the most monumental seventies landmark films, this making-of account is a very honest and also often sentimental journey into the world of DePalma's adaptation of King's novel which is powered by formidable and vitally important performances from women such as Spacek and Laurie (both of whom received Oscar nominations for their roles). A must have for dedicated cinephiles and horror movie enthusiasts alike.

William Girdler¿s career was short, lasting just six years but even by the standards of those who toil away in the exploitation arena, he was extremely prolific, making nine features between 1972 and 1978, when he was killed in a helicopter crash in the jungle outside Manila, aged only thirty. He specialized in making the kind of films which attract the rabid cult fan, from the occult horror of his low-budget debut Asylum of Satan to the more accomplished - but even more bizarre - The Manitou in a journey that took him from Louisville, Kentucky to the Philippines via Hollywood. This is the first book about Girdler¿s films and includes contributions from a number of his collaborators, as well as extracts from treatments for some of his unmade projects. From Satan to Pam Grier and from a killer bear to a resurrected medicine man, this is the Wild World of William Girdler. Ian Cooper is the author of five books including Frightmares: A History of British Horror and The Manson Family on Film and Television. He lives in Germany.
