What was it like to grow up in a Modernist residence? Did these radical environments shape the way that children looked at architecture later in life? The oral history in this book paint a uniquely intimate portrait of Modernism. The authors conducted interviews with people, who spent their childhood in radical Modernist domestic spaces, uncovering both serene and poignant memories. The recollections range from the ambivalence of philosopher Ernst Tugendhat, now 90 years old, who lived in the famous Mies van der Rohe house in Brno (1930) to the fond reminiscing of the youngest daughter of the Schminke family, who still dreams of her Scharoun-designed ship-like villa in Lobau (1933). The book offers a unique, private and often refreshing perspective on these icons of the avant-garde.
Single-family houses are becoming increasingly outdated. They offer no response to demographic change or to the fact that there are fewer and fewer life-long relationships. They are often too inflexible for new family models or ways of cohabitation. This publication presents projects in recent years in Japan, which respond to the need for new forms of housing. The architects are developing solutions that allow residents to live together but still maintain enough distance and privacy. The presented apartment types and their layout allow for a variety of life models. Particularly interesting here is the use of spaces that provide a gradual transition from public to private space-an approach to building that, according to experts, could revolutionize western residential architecture. The publication portrays these new forms of building and living based on prominent Japanese examples that include Shigeru Ban, Sou Foujimoto, and Akihisa Hirata.
Urban design is based on planning and design principles that need to meet functional demands on the one hand, but on the other hand bring the design elements together into a distinctive whole. This book examines the important design and presentation principles of urban design, using selected historical examples and more.
In the first decades of the 20th century, civil engineers were widely seen as a role model for future architects. Their role within the contemporary architecture movements, however, was hardly discussed. To this day, even fundamental questions about collaborations, rivalries, or conflicts between the two sister disciplines still await answers. This volume brings together contributions by international scholars on the cooperation between architects and civil engineers in various countries in the interwar period. By offering both insights into national peculiarities and new reflections on the general nature, character, and significance of such joint efforts, it opens exciting new perspectives on the modern building culture of Europe and beyond.
Architectural work in dialogue with different disciplines Founded by Paolo Brescia and Tommaso Principi as a design network between Milan, London and Mumbai, OBR explores new modes of contemporary living, developing an architecture that responds sensitively to and stimulates interaction with its environment, while adapting to the changing needs of society. OBR's work strives to promote a sense of community enhancing individual identities. In this book, the architects present their work as a communal endeavor. They engage influential people in transdisciplinary dialogues that extend beyond architecture itself, questioning its autonomy and offering new perspectives on its potential and relevance. The monograph showcases a selection of twenty-four international projects by OBR that address key social issues through the medium of architecture. The first monograph on OBR's work Selection of 24 international projects presented in texts, plans and photographs Transdisciplinary dialogues with Roni Horn, Michel Desvigne, Giovanna Borasi, and Georges Amar
