The Otherground is a vast terrestrial expanse. It encompasses most all of the biosphere that lies beyond the total annexation of the triune world. It is that marginalized region where those exiled from the first, second, and third worlds go to get some thinking done, some soul-searching done, some work done. It is, by default, the fourth world: a world of intellect, of ethics, and of labor wherein the head, the heart, and the hands coexist in mutual respect and interdependence - and where the disenfranchised can go to openly eschew the megalomaniacal mandates of the mainstream. The author, born Josef Nyx in a now-abandoned hospital in Detroit, has been a factory-worker, janitor, burger-slinger, gas station attendant, parcel sorter/truck loader, sewage treatment plant worker, wastewater analyst/lab tech, science advisor/museum exhibits co-designer, technical writer, public school teacher, and field biologist. He has written more than 1,100 poems and song lyrics. He has lived in southern California since his early twenties and currently resides in a small town in The Mojave Desert.

Lyrics by Joseph Nicks Born in Detroit just a few years before he started school, the author has survived mostly by "not quitting his day job." "That never really worked out for me.," he states, though we're not really sure how he means that. He has spent most of his years studying life as a biologist, contemplating death as a poet, and searching in vain for a third alternative. He currently resides in a small town in the Mojave Desert.

Monona Wali is a short story writer and novelist, and an award-winning documentary filmmaker and screenwriter. Her stories have been published in The Santa Monica Review, Stone Canoe, Tiferet, Catamaran, A Journal of South Asian American Literature and other literary journals. She was born in Benares, India and immigrated to the United States with her family as a young child. She lives in Los Angeles, California and teaches creative writing at Santa Monica College and volunteers with InsideOut Writers, an organization that offers writing classes for incarcerated youth.

Approaching 70 years old in the spring of 2023, Mark Fargo still seeks those two-lane roads, diners, small towns, and the unknown. With his reliable Yamaha Super Tenere motorcycle, he now is looking at over a 120,000 over the last six years.Mark has met hundreds of new people and has developed some new friends who have generously offered their homes to him if he ever passes through again. Boomslang is the name of an arboreal African snake (Dispholidus typus) of the family Colubridae, known for its potent venom and  rear-fanged jaw structure.It was also the label affixed to a widely-ignored poetic form championed by various disenfranchised and largely unpublished writers of the late twentieth century.  The boomslang tongue can be vaguely traced back to its rather obscure roots in mid-1980s Long Beach (California) and even more tentatively to late-1970s Detroit. It was a malleable and difficult-to-define dialect often characterized by contra-diction, half-assonance, lexiflexion, and neologism.  It was decidedly non-prosaic and generally ebbed and flowed in subtle to even elusive rhythms that followed a sort of unsung musicality.  Very few examples have survived - and copies of these titles are now quite difficult to find (see Appendix B).  Most of  the authors have long since died or else descended deep into dementia, leaving Joseph Nicks as one of boomslang''s last remaining practitioners.
