Almost Home is our family's journey to embrace our oldest son Jon's "It-ness." At the age of nineteen, during one of his terms in prison, Jon was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. By the time Jon turned thirty, he had spent half his life in the prison system. It was during this time that we learned to accept the reality of our son's mental condition as well as embrace our parental responsibility to him. We also learned to overcome our own "It-ness" -- the social stigma of having a family member incarcerated. This book is for anyone who has ever been tagged as "It." In Africa, first he crosses the Congolese jungle to discover one of the primitive lifestyles of his original country, and then he lands in cities like Abidjan, Nairobi, Cape Town, Rabat and Brazzaville. In Europe he visits France, Greece, Belgium, Italy and Spain. He immigrates to the USA after escaping being killed by soldiers, becomes a U.S. citizen raising three children, and works as financier at one of the prestigious universities.

Killeen and the surrounding area has long been known by paranormal researchers and ghost hunters as a habitat for haunts; a virtual Mecca for the paranormal. Robert "Dr. Bob" Ridgway graduated from Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California-Davis. After graduating from Veterinary College, he worked for a short period of time at a veterinary hospital in Topeka, Kansas. He entered the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, where he became Director of the Animal Medicine Division on Okinawa. He later completed a residency in Comparative Medicine at the Madigan Army Medical Center. He is a graduate of Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He was the Treasurer of the District of Columbia Academy of Veterinary Medicine for fourteen years. He served as Secretary-Treasurer and President of the District of Columbia Veterinary Medical Association. He was the first U.S. Army officer to be in charge of the Department of Defense Military Dog Veterinary Service at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He completed a Master's in International Management at the University of Maryland, University College. After retiring from the Army, he worked at Covance Laboratories, Banfield Pet Hospital, and Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Ridgway is a diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and a diplomate in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Dr. Ridgway is married and has one daughter, has one male cat, and lives in Florida.

Within the pages of Balondo Through the Ages 1100‒2013, author and Balondo expert Aja Oro properly documents the Balondo story, in the form of a history book, for the perusal of all humankind. It is now a little over seventy years since our mother, Sosia Gottesfeld, finished her diary which describes how she, her husband and small child survived the holocaust in Ukraine from 1941 through 1944. The handwritten Yiddish notebook was translated into English shortly after her death in 1990, and the original is now in the Yad Vashem Archives in Jerusalem, in record group 033/1224. The diary describes the conditions under which Jews lived in after the German occupation in 1941 in Skala, a town then on the Eastern border of Poland. Initially, though harassed, brutalized, and systematically degraded with many murdered by the Germans, they still were a community. That changed with the first pogrom in September 1942, when the Germans swept into town and in collaboration with the Ukrainian militia seized all the Jews they could catch. After numerous killings in the streets, the captive Jews were sent to labor or extermination camps. Those who escaped had hid in bunkers, dug outs, and forests. Shortly thereafter, Skala was declared Judenrein (free of Jews). The diary vividly describes going into hiding and the daily torments, hunger, and fear of being discovered by the neighboring Ukrainian villagers, the Ukrainian militia, or German patrols. Every day was filled with apprehension. The field of Community Development (CD) is in the grip of a "crisis in knowing" i.e. what is it and how do we know it works? Until these simple questions can be answered simply, related questions of what should be measured and why it's important will remain obscure. Measuring Change in Poor Communities is a call to be more deliberate about what is being measured and what it means. The academics, policy experts, and institutional evaluators of CD initiatives have contributed much to this crisis. They decided that the practice of CD is a "black box" of ideas and techniques germane to no particular body of thought or scholarly discipline. This has helped to precipitate a "theory gap" that prevents knowledge production by any conventional means - there's no recognized theory of community change to guide CD research and evaluation. CD practitioners, on the other hand, do have a common understanding of their work. Empirical studies show they intentionally pursue behavioral change objectives that are firmly rooted in our social work traditions and today's global social change movement. The problem of identifying an analytical model based in sound theory was solved over 50 years ago and CD practice found its natural home in community sociology. It's time to embrace this epistemological record and a general theory of CD practice.
