The epic poem "Beowulf" has been explored by many scholars, but personal acquaintance revealed that some important aspects always seem to have been overlooked. The author's objective with this book was to correct such omissions, but discrepancy turned out to be more widespread than envisaged. Rather than being solely a contribution to Scandinavian history, the material mainly illustrates aspects of English origins as viewed by a gifted member of their own kind. A post-Roman doomed culture arose in eastern England. Largely ignored in English records, the history of this is obscure enough, but the geography is even more so, since reliable place-names are but few. The poem predominantly served as an allegorical tool and, laced with folklore, was used furtively to comment on the behaviour of those in leadership roles, both in politics and religion. Synthesis even allows an identity to be suggested for the poet.
No one can tell what the "Woods" is. You have to read it and discover for yourself. What kind of place is it? What kind of reality is it? What are its shapes and forms? It is safe to say that it holds a mystery in a story of life, death and something in between. Maybe it is an existence where nothing is what it seems. It is a place where something can be anything at one point and something else at the next. It is surely our reflection in time and space of who we are, what we think the world is like and our place in it. I couldn't tell you much else because I wouldn't want you to hold me on to it. It is safer that way. What I would tell you is as much as anything can waste your time, I hope this won't. So taking a deep breath and simply diving in would be the way with it, although, there is no universal recipe. It is different for each individual. That is the beauty of it if I dare to describe it a bit. So however it sounds like to you, maybe a place you could get lost or find what you are looking for, going there is totally up to you. Feel free to make of it what you will. This is yours now.
