  • - XI XI's Animal Poems
    af Xi Xi Xi
    342,95 kr.

Most of Xi Xi's animal poems featured here are new works written during the past few years. Full of whimsical ideas, they embody the notion of "all humans are siblings, and all things are companions," brimming with warmth and compassion. These poems could be described as bright and cheerful, approachable, clever and fluid, humorous, and deep with meaning, written as though the author is able to directly communicate with animals. Overall, they serve as a voice for animals, showing that they are able to coexist equally and peacefully, resulting in a "carnival of animals." More than twenty young Hong Kong artists and illustrators have been invited to join this project, with each poem accompanied by different illustrations, their styles of illustration totally distinct, not limited to any particular form, presenting multiple heterogeneities. This book is suitable for young readers, as well as adults who appreciate literature and art.

  • - The Chinese in Montreal
    af Chan Kwok Bun
    382,95 kr.

Now distributed by Brill for The Chinese University PressThis book is, in fact, a study of human survival. It describes the Chinese immigrants in Montreal, Canada, as they encounter racial discrimination. It begins with the arrival of the first batch of Cantonese, in the 1850s, in Victoria, British Columbia, and ends, in the late 1970s and 1980s, in Montreal. Like Vancouver and Toronto, Montreal saw the influx of two contrasting groups of Chinese: refugees of Chinese descent from Indo-China, and economic migrants from Hong-Kong. The book uses oral history and in-depth interview material, in documenting the costs of racism on the one hand, and the strategies for adaptation on the other. The author argues that the kind of racism the Chinese in Montreal have been subjected to is a systematic one. This book is now distributed by Brill for The Chinese University Press.

  • - Chinese and American Perspectives on Security, Trade, and Cultural Exchange
    af Joseph Y S Cheng
    517,95 kr.

At the end of the 20th Century, the focus of global attention and concern is on the future relationship between the world's most influential nation and its most populous one. The series of high-level meetings and the exchange of unusually long summit visits that occupied the center of the world stage in the late 1990s reveal that both sides recognize the other's global importance. In the words of President Bill Clinton, "the role China chooses to play will powerfully shape the next century."The years 1997 and 1998 will be remembered by many for the critically acclaimed summit visits of Jiang Zemin to the United States and Bill Clinton to China. This book moves beyond the Clinton-Jiang summits of 1997-1998 to explore long-term prospects in light of recent developments. Nineteen scholars from diverse disciplines, including eight from China mainland institutions, address the outlook for security relations in the Asia-Pacific Region; prospects for strategic partnership; issues concerning Taiwan, Tibet, and trade; the potential for information, technology, and educational exchanges; future competition for natural resources; changing images of each other; and other critical dimensions of expanding non-state relationships. The interaction of China and the United States promises to constitute the world's most important bilateral relationship well into the 21st Century. To be constructive and enduring, relationships must be based on mutual understanding and respect. This volume provides an opportunity to advance both foundations among students, scholars, policy makers, and the attentive public in the East and the West.

  • - An Asian Perspective
    af Yasheng Huang
    437,95 kr.

China is the largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) among developing countries. This study compares China's FDI performance with a number of other Asian countries and focuses on the policy and institutional factors that lead to a large demand for FDI in China. The policy and institutional factors include import substitution, excess investment demand and features of China's FDI regulatory system. This study shows that there are costs associated with such a high demand for FDI, including overbidding for FDI and the associated loss of Chinese bargaining power, large import demand, and the structure of the FDI at variance with Chinese official policies. This study also briefly discusses the foreign economic policy implications of China's FDI absorption and suggests some future research possibilities.

?The metabolic activation of many drugs and xenobiotics in vivo is effected through the large family of cytochrome P450s enzymes that catalyse a diverse spectrum of reactions including the metabolism of both endogenous and exogenous compounds. There is considerable evidence suggesting that changes in P450 activities can affect the in vivo toxicity of drugs in both animals and humans. Oxidative metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cancer, through the formation of toxic intermediates and carcinogenic metabolites are formed from drugs and xenobiotics. A marked overall increase in the metabolic activation of the commonly used analgesic agent, paracetamol, was found in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, as indicated by a much higher percentage recovery of the oxidative metabolites cysteine and mercapturate conjugates, compared to healthy controls and patients with chronic hepatitis B infection. It was through that metabolic activation of some drugs and xenobiotics through the actions of specific cytochrome P450s may be enhanced in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
