In Learn Like a PIRATE, Paul Solarz explains how to design classroom experiences that encourage students to take risks and explore their passions in a stimulating, motivating, and supportive environment where improvement, rather than grades, is the focus. Discover how student-led classrooms help students thrive and develop into self-directed, confident citizens who are capable of making smart, responsible decisions, all on their own.
Student engagement . . . Everyone says it, but what does that mean? It's very easy for one person to say a lesson is engaging while another person might view that same lesson as disengaging. Tech companies promise to "engage students" and "measure student engagement" when they are really only measuring the number of minutes students spend online. Some or all of those students, however, may have been bored out of their minds. Despite the ubiquitous use of the word engagement, there is little to no agreement on what that word means. Alice Keeler and Heather Lyon know a few important things about engagement: The first is that do not teach. The second key is that it's only when people are interested or absorbed that they are really engaged. So how do you create tasks that students want to do? That's where the fifty strategies that the engagement and Google tools experts share here come in. This book is full of templates, tips, tricks, and hacks for shifting engagement levels from disengaged to engaged using tools everyone can try. Learn how to use:Google Docs and Slides as collaboration toolsSpreadsheets in ways that are fun and creative. Google Classroom to recognize students as individuals Google Forms to quickly see where students are struggling.

We must change ourselves to be able to educate others.Education is about change. At its most fundamental, the purpose of educating others is creating change in thinking, understanding, and behavior-positively influencing the trajectory of students' lives. But making change requires courage, and we can't see how to meet students' needs until we know how to meet our own. Educators need the courage to make their voices heard and the boldness to earnestly engage with the opinions of people they don't necessarily agree with or even like. Whether it's changing our beliefs, changing the way we communicate, or changing the way we make decisions, Dr. Shree Walker knows the challenges and fears educators face. She also knows that when she faced her own fears, her confidence grew and she became a better communicator, a better facilitator of change, and a better decision-maker. That's why she's written this book about problem solving with diverse learners for diverse learners. Educatore Me! is Dr. Walker's guide for educators who want to make change and find the belief necessary to overcome the inevitable pitfalls ahead when they do. In it, she shares moving, almost unbelievable stories and inspiring strategies to help those who want to enact real change for their students. This book will challenge you to become a highly effective agent for change and support you as a powerful advocate for your students.
Well-being and resilience can be learned-by students and teachers!Teaching is a deeply relational endeavor at its core, and we cannot be there for our students unless we are first emotionally available to ourselves. But that kind of well-being doesn't just happen. It takes investing in our own happiness, resilience, and presence for us to flourish and become the kind of educators students can rely on-the kind that can help them flourish as well. For over fifteen years, Roni Habib has used positive psychology to teach thousands of educators and leaders effective and rigorously studied practices for developing the types of thoughts, attitudes, and actions that allow us to thrive in life and to be top educators no matter what subject or grade level we teach. In Happy & Resilient, Roni shares practical ideas, skills, and exercises that will support your teaching in the classroom, your leadership at school, and your own well-being and resilience. Each chapter includes activities to use in the classroom with students or at school with your staff, journal prompts to deepen your reflection, and graphic organizers that recap the core exercises. This book lays out a path for what all educators deserve: to be happy and resilient. Endorsements"A must-read for any educator, mentor, coach, or parent. It'll even help you better understand yourself!"-Julie Lythcott-Haims, New York Times bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult"A road map that will make you laugh, reflect, think, and, most importantly, grow as a person on this professional journey."-Marianne Chowning-Dray, Recipient of Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching from President Barack Obama"Whether you're a new teacher or a seasoned educator, the insights and strategies in this book will help you thrive both in and outside the classroom. Phonemic awareness is a critical component of reading. It is the ability to hear and manipulate the spoken parts of words. (It falls under the umbrella of phonological awareness). Phonological and phonemic awareness activities change the reading brain and can bridge the gap between phonics and decoding. The game in this book uses phonemic awareness skills to build skilled readers. Segmenting and blending sounds can be very tricky for young children. Try to have a shorter wait time between sounds when you are practicing this skill if a child is having trouble hearing the word.

We can better prepare children for the adversities that will come their way. Today, Dr. Robert A. Martinez is an accomplished author, public speaker, and education leader blessed with a loving family. But he's well aware that the trajectory of his life could have gone another way. After his idyllic childhood was shattered at the age of twelve by his mother's death from cancer, his home and school life fell apart. With his brokenhearted father unable to hold things together, the boy's rebellious behavior culminated in a devastating rupture. With the patient mentorship of his brother and his own inner fortitude, Martinez built his life back step by step, eventually achieving success, happiness, forgiveness, and reconciliation. In this inspirational memoir, the author uses his own experiences to exhort others toward a life of personal and professional fulfillment, following his "recipe for resilience." While the book focuses on how educators can positively impact young students-especially at-risk youth in challenging environments-Martinez also encourages adopting these resilience principles beyond the classroom and school district into all our relationships, businesses, and local communities, ultimately improving society as a whole. In doing so, we might manifest a more hopeful, humanistic world for ourselves and future generations, where ideals like love, empathy, support, and safety become not just aspirations but lived reality.Endorsements¿"Robert's reflective examples will benefit any educator, whether they are just getting started or should they need to reevaluate their approach."-John Corippo"Recipes for Resilience is an amazing resource to assist any leader with recognizing small successes, increasing empowerment, and building tools to persevere through tough situations." -Joshua Stamper"If you are looking for a hearty portion of sound advice that leads to self-discovery, small victories, or overcoming the unexpected in public education, you will find it in Recipes for Resilience."-Rebecca Coda
