In the Sarboucane sea, Balbuzar the pirate reigns supreme. He attacks, plunders, sinks, and ransoms everything that comes within his reach. Savage, cruel, formidable, certainly, Balbuzar is; but also with a certain bonhomie, and a great sense of justice. He is in harmony with the sea, the islands, the wind, the rocks. Around him, birds, always. Men, women, children...they all love him. For he is free as the air. But now the Empress Pépita XIII is worried about her state of affairs, and Balbuzar's constant plundering. She sends against him her best officer, the Commodore, at the head of an armada. He represents force, order, law. Arrogant, domineering, relentless. And sure to be the one who will clean the Sarboucane sea.>The struggle, however, is unequal, for the Commodore has immense resources, an army behind him and the power of the empire. He's built a gigantic ship that will surely sweep away the pirates and their black-flag flotilla. Balbuzar's fate seems certain. Will the outlaw will be crushed by the enormity of the adversary? Cooked in the imperial pot? Or will the cunning pirate will find the rift in the monster's breastplate? Will he will defeat his monstrous foe, like David blasting Goliath? Balbuzar is the story of a confrontation between two worlds, that of royalty and that of piracy, between conformity and diversity. Gérard Moncombe's text deftly balances action, humor and poetry, while artist Frédéric Pillot's stunning, gorgeously detailed illustrations help paint this rousing, unforgettable tale. One that you'll want to come back to again and again... A fable about freedom, about resistance, about power. And an ode to nature.
The attack on the Zakador estate is bloody and merciless. Unfortunately, Kassan is gravely injured and is left fighting for his life. Master Igen doesn't leave his lover's side, helping him and hoping that he might recover soon. Hakar's child is allowed to live at the estate. The child brings happiness and laughter to an otherwise gloomy house. As the hard winter is over, King Asakin and Caesar make travel preparations, but going back to the palace might bring turmoil, as the Queen Mother is not ready to renounce her position without a fight.
The Queen Mother sends Lasil, her most trusted subject, to lead the army against the Zakador clan. Luckily, Lasil used to be under Igen's command. Thus, she returns to her former Master with valuable information and a plan to defeat the Queen. Laone, the forsaken daughter of the Banan family, also presents an arrangement that might be convenient for the people at the Zakador estate. With the harsh winter arriving sooner than expected and the Queen Mother's gargantuan army in proximity, Igen, Kassan and King Asakin will face grim challenges.
Kassan becomes terribly ill and Igen discovers that Laone is guilty of poisoning him. In the meantime, the Queen Mother sends her fierce army, led by Hakar, to attack the Zakador estate. Igen has no choice but to get involved in the battle. Aided by spies, Hakar enters the residence and takes a valuable prisoner. Kassan must finally pick a side: the last surviving member of his family or the man he grew to love. King Asakin faces dilemmas of his own, with his mother bent on him continuing their lineage and a forbidden budding romance on the way.
