"A...vivid collection of urban tales...containing keen insights...full of believable, distinct and memorable characters." -Kirkus Reviews2024 PenCraft Award Winner"In these beautifully written stories, P.A. Callaro shows us a wide variety of people grappling with the fundamental problem of how to maintain vitality, creativity, kindness, and hope in a world that presents so many impediments to the flourishing of these crucial human virtues. Not Down in Any Map is a thoughtful, nuanced, soulful debut." -Matthew Sharpe, author of The Sleeping Father, an NBC Today Show Book Club selection, and Jamestown, and former Adjunct Assistant Professor of Writing, Columbia University MFA ProgramIn this collection of twelve insightful and evocative stories, vivid characters bruised by their relationships, their decisions, or by life itself are compelled to move in new directions. These are everyday people tempted, or forced, to search for truth, guided by the signposts of their urban world. But along the way, each discovers a primordial truth: that the world is indifferent, and its signposts are ambiguous, often concealing truth rather than illuminating it.Written with fearless introspection, lyrical prose, and rich symbolism, Not Down in Any Map explores the choices we make between fear and courage, hostility and compassion, disillusionment and hope-momentous choices bearing the power to either curse or save.

Apocalypse: "The complete and final destruction of the world, as described in the biblical book of Revelation."Christ's Second Coming motivates several characters during the Civil War battle of Fredericksburg. They assume the bloodbath of December, 1862, is the biblical Armageddon, and that Confederate General Stonewall Jackson will be revealed as Christ come again. The Apocalypse also figures in 2nd Century Asia Minor, where a certain Montanus believes he is the incarnation of God the Father, and that his two female disciples form a new Trinity, who will orchestrate the world's end. The eras unite first by a magical talisman, which is thought to have healing, resurrecting, and prophetic properties; and second, by a demonic girl who first appears on the battlefield. In the novel, the word 'Apocalypse' also connotes radical, psychological shifts: A slave rejects his paradoxical thought world by escaping North in a railroad crate, having spent his early years raised by a white mother, the wife of a plantation owner, while 'playing' the slave fully when he is auctioned to a new master as an adolescent. Reality upends as a doubting Protestant cleric-grief stricken at the loss of his young daughter-embraces revenge. A prim, finishing school mistress willingly enters the dark realm of a murderous stranger, rejecting her past for a sudden and seemingly inexplicable romance. A street preacher abandons his apocalyptic obsession for one greater: a young, black woman he spots on an auction block in Richmond and madly pursues-a passion which, in the end, offers purpose and hope. The novel follows the medieval poet Dante Alighieri's (1265-1321) tripartite division of his "Divine Comedy": Volume 1 represents 'The Inferno'-the battle of Fredericksburg and its immediate aftermath. Volume 2 contains 'Purgatorio' and 'Paradiso'-walking through desolation in the former and attaining heaven in the latter. The novel subverts the poet, however, suggesting that hell and heaven confront us fully in this life. Dante's paramour, Beatrice, who he barely knew, plays out in several love sequences, suggesting that love is most powerful when it is immediate and irrational.

A Magician's Memoir is a collection of short pieces of writing that convey the experience of contact with the invisible world of spirit. It consists of short bursts of experience and meaning. It is highly condensed and often surprising. The sensitive reader may gasp or cry. Readers interested in such content have said the material is helpful. Some express delight. The book consists of a mixture of genres: stories both factual and transcendent, dialogues with a variety of beings, haiku-like journaling, poetry, color images, travel to exotic locales. Generally, each piece extends over no more than a page or two. It is the kind of book you can pick up and begin reading any piece because each one stands on its own.The author Jack Cain considers his job that of a scribe. The material is given from an invisible source - words appear but they are not visual or auditory - they appear in consciousness. During the writing process, it is important not to "fall into the words." Don't think about them too much. Just verify, "Did I get that right? Is the grammar clear?" And move on.May this material be a positive influence in our unfolding world.

Most women expect to have a typical pregnancy, especially when they are told that everything is going well. This was the case for Karen up until a night when all which seemed certain was suddenly replaced with questions, including the fate of her child. Realizations about pregnancy, birth, infancy and future children shove previous visions of how life will be to the background to make permanent space for new, difficult truths. Karen provides a raw guide to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a place experienced by many parents but rarely explored narratively. Twenty-three Weeks is a love story between mother and child. It is a reflection on grief and compassion. It is a first person account of our human potential to withstand suffering and find honest acceptance.

The author's childhood in Germany culminated with Kristallnacht, shortly after his ninth birthday. To ensure his survival, four months later, his parents sent him to England on a Kindertransport, not knowing whether they would see him again. Five weeks later his father died. Despite these traumatic experiences, the author eventually flourished in his new homeland. His mother and sister escaped to England just days prior to the outbreak of World War Two. Seven years later, he and his family moved to America, where he earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry at Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago, launching his career to become an academic Biochemist. His marriage to an African American woman contributed to the author's involvement with the Civil Rights movement, in the early 1960s, shortly after his arrival to accept a faculty position as the first Biochemist hired by Syracuse University. The author describes his three activities as a professor: teaching, research, and service. In addition to teaching Biochemistry, and his specialty, Enzymology, he taught a course which sought to acquaint students intending to enter the health professions with some of the dilemmas of contemporary medicine. His research, which was funded with federal grants for virtually his entire career, focused on the mechanisms of action and regulation of enzymes, and led to over 80 publications. He directed the research of numerous undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D., students. With his wife and daughter, he spent a sabbatical year in England, where he conducted research at Oxford University. His many service activities at the University culminated with his appointment as the chairman of the Department of Biology.Seventy years after leaving his native Leipzig, the author returned, with his daughter, for an emotional visit that was filmed for a German television program. He was able to visit his father's grave, the apartment in which he lived as a child, and other sites that were personally meaningful for him.Following his retirement, the author compiled an extensive family genealogy; published a book on the history of the Syracuse University Department of Biology; served on the board of a local musical organization, and wrote a book celebrating its 125th anniversary.Recollections and Reflections was written primarily to enable the author to retrieve fading memories, and to reflect on his good fortune that, despite the turmoil in his childhood, he was able to forge a successful career and to live a rich, fulfilling life. This would not have been possible without the British government, which rescued the author and thousands of other children from almost certain extermination; the support of his family and friends; the kindness and generosity of the family who took him into their home in England; and the encouragement of his scientific mentors.
