In the mid 21st century, a Swiss cyber-security firm tasked with countering ransomware attacks on major financial institutions exposes a Russian criminal gang supported by a top North Korean hacker. This leads to the discovery of a much more dangerous plot to destroy economic databases, aimed at causing chaos on a global scale. The defence against this threat requires extending the abilities of neural networks run on an advanced quantum computer, creating a form of artificial intelligence which can compromise the cryptography forming the basis of the security of both computer networks and electronic communication. Not only does this tool exceed expectations, it opens a Pandora's Box of other possible applications that could risk destruction of civil liberties and the entire basis of free democracies. The team use this tool to combat threats from China, the USA and also criminal organisations who are competing to gain control of such power. Inevitably, this leads to inflicting punishments that are comparable with the impacts of conventional warfare. Recognising the dangers of wider access to this technological singularity, they decide to actively limit further developments in this direction elsewhere so that, for the near future, this small group are reluctantly placed in the position of a global oligarchy - with all the responsibilities and dangers that this entails.

An eighteen-year-old enters a bunker in western Massachusetts. She reawakens an emergent behavior artificial intelligence placed in the vault five days after she was born. The machine introduces itself as Arthur; she was intended to resurrect the AI after it had been murdered by its creator, Adam Eli Nilo, her maternal grandfather's father. Dr. Nilo's efforts to save humanity from self-destruction using advanced technologies such as AI and genetic manipulation all lead to more problems than solutions and ultimately lead him to a mental breakdown. His story is interwoven with the experiences of his two children, who use technologies in far more mundane, yet equally unsuccessful ways.Dr. Nilo's son, Benjamin Rodgers Nilsson, is the result of Nilo succumbing to the advances of a lonely neighbor when they were both sixteen. Ben's personal journal entries begin when he buys a voice-recognition device that can translate his words into clean text for his eighteenth birthday. The entries are revealed in reverse order so that the first one encountered is the one he makes on his granddaughter's eighteenth birthday in 2101. Along the way, we learn how technologies have affected people such as Ben but, in the end, have done little to enhance their lives.Dr. Nilo's only legally recognized child, Susannah, is the product of the process he developed with the aid of Arthur to perfect humans. Susannah's story describes the six months in 2083 leading to the birth of Ben's granddaughter and Arthur's murder. She has been kept in the dark about being a C Square, a person whose two gametes were chosen by Arthur to meet specific criteria aimed at creating a perfected human being. Susannah ultimately learns her true heritage and identity just as it becomes impossible for her to access the resources she would need to fully understand her place as a second Eve.The same themes in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein frame the whole: the consequences of humans using technological methods that circumvent nature; the futility of technological progress as a substitute for human development; and the alienation of creations from their creators, even when those creations are biological children, and their creator is an unknown parent. The story concludes with Arthur telling the teenager that humans create gods who they say created them. Gods do not have the power to create anything. However, they can be omniscient and therefore far beyond the capacity of their human creators, just as Arthur is.

The sensational sequel to The Dimbo Patrol. As reviwed by readers' Favorite, who give this book 5 stars...Lemonlips is a work of fiction in the historical fiction, action, and interpersonal drama sub-genres, and was penned by author John Klawitter. A reworking of a previous novel that explored daily life, love, and culture during the Vietnam War, this is the second book in the series following The Dimbo Patrol. The novel is intended for adult reading audiences and contains the use of explicit language throughout, as well as some scenes of the realistic and visceral experiences of war. Here we continue the primary plot with an ensemble cast of such colorful characters as Beale, Mad Denny, and Larky, discovering more than they ever wished to know about life, death, and themselves.Author John Klawitter presents the Nam Viet Series in a condensed and more palatable format for readers who like to take their military epics bit by bit. I thought that the story split and chapter separation made this volume a compelling piece within itself, choosing good start and endpoints to tell a significant and emotive story with plenty of highs and lows. One of the things which I really enjoyed about the work was the use of the present tense narrative structure, which keeps us grounded in the moment and the sudden twists of fate that can happen during such a tense and tenuous time. I also felt that the dialogue was a particular standout, and gave great emotion and insight into the military culture at the time. Overall, I would certainly recommend Lemonlips and the Nam Viet series for fans of emotive and immersive historical fiction.

In the midst of a bloody battle with the menacing troll, Beowulf, the handsome and mighty warrior begs the witch to take him to a far land in order to spare his life. She warns him that this land will be something he will never understand. She grants him his wish, where he finds himself at a female university dorm in twenty-first century London. He knocks on Kyla's door, where she is flabbergasted at the handsome warrior dressed in leather hides. Kyla, at first, is reluctant to believe this man is an ancient Viking warrior. She takes him in and teaches him the ways of the twenty-first century.Kyla keeps Beowulf a secret to the outside world, by giving him an alias name. Beowulf, enchanted by Kyla's kindness, falls in love with her. Her best friend, Beth, is enthralled with this mysterious beau but is unaware he is a fourteen hundred year old Viking warrior. Kyla tries to fight her feelings for the ancient Viking, but his love for her is too strong to resist. This blend of romance and humor unfolds until they are faced with the arrival of Grendel, the troll. The witches' love for Grendel is a curse to the mighty warrior, where she plays the rules of sorcery by the book. Kyla can't fit into Beowulf's mystical world because she is an outsider. The witch knows and understands Beowulf's destiny and isn't pleased when she discovers Beowulf's unstoppable love for Kyla.Grendel terrorizes the streets of London, where Beowulf feels responsible. He asks the witch to rid modern London of Grendel, but the only way to do so is to send Beowulf with the troll back to sixth century Daneland. This is not what either of the lovers wanted. They are both pained by the separation.Kyla is then given the chance to join Beowulf in his time; she is reluctant about living in the sixth century. She becomes anxious to see her love and assures the witch that her love for the warrior is genuine. The witch then agrees on condition Kyla fulfills the four Norse Rules. Kyla manages to accomplish three out of the four. The witch grants the wish, due to Beowulf's request. When Kyla arrives in sixth century Daneland, she struggles to survive the unruly conditions under King Hrothgar and his mead hall. However, she is reunited with her warrior, who tries to shield her from sixth century hardships.Kyla learns the people of Daneland have had dealings with the unruly troll mother, who later imprisons Beowulf. Luckily, Beowulf breaks loose from the tortures of the troll mother and he decides to let her live. The king orders Beowulf to slay Grendel, once and for all. Through several attempts, Beowulf finally kills the troll and the king honors him for his bravery. A celebration takes place where King Hrothgar indicates Beowulf will be the next king with Kyla as his queen. Kyla fears Beowulf will want to remain in his sixth century so he can be king of the Danes.Just when Kyla expects that she and her warrior will be returning to twenty-first century London, she is then faced with her warrior's final battle with the dragon. This is Beowulf's biggest challenge, because the witch knows his destiny. She knows the battle with the two-headed dragon is when Beowulf will die. Kyla is terrified that she will lose her love as she watches the dragon almost devour her warrior. Kyla calls for the witch's help. The only way Beowulf can survive the dragon's mortal wound is to be sent to the twenty-first century to have modern medicine save his life. He will no longer be part of the magical-mystical world and he will no longer have the strength of thirty men. The witch makes it clear that she will never step foot in Beowulf's life again because he is now an ordinary man. However, with his own mortal strength, he thrusts his sword into the dragon and it falls to its death.

Love and Darker Passions is a collection of provocative short stories by today's up-and-coming authors of dark, urban and Gothic fantasy. Award-winning author Karen Duvall sends a Millennial Alice through a very different looking glass, and acclaimed author Lee Barwood sends the Sight-gifted bard of her upcoming series into the passionate world of faerie to hunt for a child - and find her own destiny. Bestseller C.E. Murphy reworks a favorite fairytale into a stunning perspective on what draws us into the arms of those we think we love. And new fantasy voices offer their disturbing visions. One man becomes enchanted by a fabled monster, another by a voice that drives him to a frenzy of self-punishing acts, and a third by the increasingly bizarre demands of his changeling girlfriend. A household appliance adores its new family and only wants to be needed - just a little more than is good for its owners, and a hexed man trusts his butler more than he does his wife. An Edenic society of loving innocents is confronted by jealous rage, and a woman too long taken for granted develops a fatal persona for whom she can at last demand her family's affection. And these lovers! They fight curses - new, historical and ancient - to be united. They undertake epic quests to find each other. And they discover, again and again, that the shadowy third figure distorting their relationships into a triangle isn't quite what they thought it would be. For in this collection love proves to be that bloody splatter across the eons that moves at the edges of our lives, in our silences and secrets, drawing yearning hearts to hear what they were always listening for, in its indecipherable whispers in the dark. In Love and Darker Passions, a host of edgy and cult fantasy authors combine their talents to make us question what inspires love, why we crave revenge against those who've stolen love from us, and what is it that makes us despair in the event of love's loss.

The Star Children are back to save America yet again. They're requested by the military and American patriots to help plan, launch, and defend a revolution in the USA to take back the country from a treasonous and corrupt government. This fictional story is presented in American Manifesto and is based largely upon and mirrors recognizable past and current political events commonly seen in the media and Internet. The developed strategy is masterfully conceived, highly unconventional, exceptionally high tech, and initially extremely shocking. The story describes how this Coup was planned and implemented and delves into the "Whys". American Manifesto is a SciFi standalone story that is built upon characters created in Star Children, a recent Finalist in the New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards. It relates the history of the Star Children and their involvement in helping save Earth from world domination. They are gifted with acute, mental powers created by genetic engineering of an alien race, the Arcadians. The Star Children use their keen intellect and advanced alien technology to purge the U.S. government of the treasonous conspirators and operatives heavily embedded within the government. They are aided in the planning strategy by General Max Bruner, a NAZI SS military operative from a secret base in Antarctica. In this story the American Manifesto becomes a rallying document embraced by the American patriots, which dictates to the government a declarations of conformity to the revolution, a document that will go down in the annals of infamy alongside the Declaration of Independence.

Living with multiple sclerosis for 17 years has certainly had its challenges. There are many days I wish I could go for a run to clear my head, or sit in a challenging yoga position to contemplate my struggles... but unfortunately, my disease has progressed in such a way that these physical outlets are not options for me. So what is a person supposed to do to process their emotional energy? Sure, crying helps. But it only goes so far.As a certified life coach, educator, and trauma survivor, I know that keeping it buried will have negative long-term effects. Lashing out at others is a pretty negative practice as well. Punching bags are not much of a thing and water activities don't typically pan out for wheelchair users. Again, what are my options?I write. These sonnets are a reflection of emotions or feelings that I was unable to process in the moment of writing for whatever reason. Some of the sonnets capture progression of disability and provide an image to my ever-fading physical ability. Things like grooming, dressing, feeling forgotten by loved ones, marital challenges, physical challenges... Some of these themes are common even for the able-bodied, but with the additional strain of a handicap, simple tasks are anything but simple- leaving the soul to yearn for an escape. Just like life, it isn't all bad. There are humorous and lighthearted poems, as well as poems of love, celebration, birthdays and anniversaries.
