The New Testament figure of John the Baptist, questing for God in the desert wilderness while eating only locusts and wild honey, easily fires our imagination and commands our respect. When John testifies about the Son of God while baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River, we are awe-inspired by his vision. However, one Bible verse-"Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he" (Mt 11:11)-has been oft-discussed among scholars and readers of the Bible. In this book, the author delves deep into this enigmatic verse by exploring John's background-the prophecies and phenomena surrounding his birth, his retreat into the wilderness as a young man, and his dramatic rise in popularity among the Israelite people. John's path culminates in his testimony at the Jordan River about Jesus and the Holy Spirit. After this fateful meeting, the author traces the divergent paths of John the Baptist and Jesus and the effect their separation has upon the Israelites. Only several months later, John's search for answers about his role and his relationship to Jesus ends with John's death in King Herod's prison.
