He knew then that it was his home. At seventeen he spent four months alone in the Canadian Wilderness practicing Earth living skills.Tim began a career teaching wildlife conservation in 1974. During this time he learned how to communicate with the spirits of the animals he worked with, enhancing his abilities to connect on an intimate level with them. He has an extensive background in working with wildlife. He has worked at the Alberta Game Farm in Alberta, Canada as an animal caretaker, the Crandon Park Zoo in Miami Florida as an animal relocation director, and Marine World Africa U.S.A. as a chimp and elephant trainer. Tim co-founded the Native Animal Rescue in Santa Cruz, California, rescuing and releasing injured wildlife. He also took that opportunity to speak at school to educate hundreds of children on wildlife conservation.
New large-scale paintings by Alex Katz capture impressions of fall in all its radiant gloryFor his new series painted in 2022 and 2023, American artist Alex Katz pushes his palette to an intense range of high-key blues, deep reds and pinks, and golden yellows to most fully express the color of the changing season. Autumn follows the eponymous exhibition at Gray Gallery in Chicago: Katz's 10th solo exhibition at this venue and his first exhibition of large-scale landscapes since 2018. The increasingly abstract new compositions are anchored by strong black paint strokes, contrasting the architecture of the tree branches against the brilliantly hued leaves and sky. Other works in the exhibition, from the related series Field's End and Tree Top, offer more subtle landscapes in muted greens, yellows and grays. This catalog includes color plates of all these works, and opens with a new poem by the artist's son Vincent Katz.Alex Katz (born 1927) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at the Cooper Union, New York and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. His work has been the subject of more than 250 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions since 1951 and can be found in over 100 public collections worldwide.
A riveting conversation between the two artists, touching on seminal influences, experiences and practicesThis thought-provoking publication presents a fecund dialogue between Chicago-based painter McArthur Binion (born 1946) and New York-based photographer Jules Allen (born 1947), two American artists taking different approaches to rendering the Black experience. To illustrate their interactions, Binion contributes a new series of paintings and Allen contributes his most recent images as well as a collection of archival black-and-white photographs. In a sinuous, stimulating conversation, the long-term friends discuss their musical influences, education and shared experiences developing their skills as artists in New York. Buoyed by mutual admiration, the two artists trade insights on one another's practice. In one striking example, Binion remarks that Allen endeavors to "take themes of the culture that were universal and personalize it, so it came from someplace specific to someplace general." The introduction penned by interdisciplinary scholar and writer Thulani Davis provides a zoomed-out jumping-off point before the reader is catapulted deep into the two artists' subjectivities.

Statsinger's intricate compositions describe vast, ethereal worlds evoking the biological systems and cellular structures of plants, as if viewed under a microscopeAmerican painter Evelyn Statsinger (1927-2016) moved to Chicago from Brooklyn in the 1940s to attend the School of the Art Institute, where she became affiliated with the Monster Roster and received mentorship and support from notable Chicago figures including Katherine Kuh, Kathleen Blackshear and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Deeply informed by her impressions of the natural world, in 1972 Statsinger moved her Chicago studio to a rural 1890s schoolhouse in Allegan, Michigan. The remote property allowed Statsinger to closely observe nature in all its orders of magnitude. Evelyn Statsinger: Currents features Statsinger's paintings and drawings from the 1980s and '90s--a period in which she developed her most immersive and otherworldly compositions. It features an essay by curator Dan Nadel, color plates and a detailed biography on the artist.
