Winter 1961. Bruce Cordell has had quite enough trouble in his life. With a reputation badly injured by the collapse of his investigation into a corrupt corporation, he wants to keep his head down. His life has become mundane, reduced to desk work, and complicated only by family responsibilities. That is until his boss gives him a new case. A case which means that he will have to travel to the Caribbean Island of St. Eleanor, a tiny British colony being readied for independence. There the moderate First Minister, Warwick Constantine, favourable to joining the new West Indian Federation, has died suddenly, apparently from an overdose of barbiturates. Cordell is commissioned to investigate the circumstances of his death. But from the outset it is clear that mysterious interests know of his assignment. A strange delivery to his home implies a warning. Onslow-Bell, representing the business consultancy, International Project Assessment (IPA), inveigles Cordell into agreeing to compile a short report on St. Eleanor's prospects in return for an astonishingly generous remuneration. But from the outset Cordell feels his movements are being shadowed. Soon he finds himself caught up in a toxic mix of independence politics: plantation workers find their produce 'blacked' by shipping companies at the behest of the monolithic Allied Fruits; the United States is keeping a wary eye on Castro's revolution across the Caribbean and seeks a Naval anchorage in St. Eleanor; the multinational Alpha Omega is hoping to develop a tourism complex, a proposal backed by the new First Minister, the radical and slick Bob Jamieson. But more disturbing he finds are the oleaginous Jake Oppenheimer from Government House and his own IPA contact, the suave Rufus Halliday, who soon enmesh Cordell in their own intrigues. Cordell is assisted by two new local colleagues, the irrepressible Lucy Wainwright and the blunt speaking Tim Quick. Early enquiries lead Cordell to Quentin Quillham, an expatriate writer who was the last person to see Constantine alive. Quillham throws doubt on the circumstances of the First Minister's death, highlighting his anger at Allied Fruits' behaviour and that his last professional duties had involved reading a confidential report, now unaccountably missing. Quillham's wife, Chantelle, meanwhile runs a successful arts gallery in the capital, St. Jacques, as well as hosting soirees for the island's budding artists and up and coming elite. Investigations are derailed by a mysterious phone call from a female informer warning him that Quillham's life is in danger. This soon becomes an accomplished fact and Cordell despairingly seeks out the original police investigator, Woodbine Parish. Parish's ruminations lead Cordell and Lucy to search for a low life, Julian Maddox who had dealings with both Quillham and also Constantine whom he had approached ostensibly on behalf of desperate plantation workers. The Governor, Sir Godwin Faed, intervenes, educating Cordell in some of the realities of independence and the growing significance and concerns of the Americans. An informer Geneviève Clouin, a young French assistant working with Chantelle Quillham opens up suspicions about Halliday, Jamieson and the activities of Alpha Omega. A harrowing quest for answers begins, one that uncovers a shocking tale of deceit, greed and relentless pursuit. Cordell realises that he has become a pawn in other people's games.
This is a story about an alien, Zola. Zola and her family have just moved to planet earth and it is Zola's first time experiencing school with humans. Zola starts school and begins to enjoy her lessons and this new adventure on earth. However, later, Zola struggles coping with new and unfamiliar feelings on her first day at school as she experiences some unkindness from her peers. These children from her class tease Zola for being and looking different from the other children in their school. At first, Zola does not understand why they are teasing her and feelings she has never felt before begin to surface. Zola meets some friends who teach her the correct and safe way to manage these feelings without causing any further upset. The school grown-ups offer her the support she needs to regulate her emotions and coping techniques she can use to continue to enjoy her school day. Throughout the day, she learns about 'the red zone' and how to manage these angry, uncomfortable feelings caused by the unkind behaviour from those peers and how to still remain kind and calm. This story will be beneficial for all children between the ages of 3 and 9 years old to teach them that it is okay to have angry feelings when someone is being unkind. The book acknowledges that all feelings are acceptable and teaches children different methods they can use to recognise and manage their feelings safely. Anger being represented as 'the red zone' is a simple way in which children can recognise and match this feeling to a colour.
In my story, I cover my idyllic childhood at home, protected under my mother's wing, where I simply existed in a state of bliss. This was before the age of six. At six years of age, I attended primary school and my whole world changed. I woke up to a world of fear, anxiety and trepidation. My daymares began and remained with me throughout my primary school days. Corporal punishment was allowed at our primary school and my teacher took full advantage. I was just a short time at school when I was beaten for the first time. I went into shock and I clammed up. I retreated into myself and I became a very sad and quiet little girl. I could not understand mental arithmetic and because of this and, instead of being patient and teaching me, my teacher beat me. This was a regular occurrence. I never spoke up about this at home. School was school and home was home, they lived side by side but they never merged. The poor treatment I received during my primary school years and the impact this abuse had on me affected my self-esteem and confidence for a very long time. I spent most of my life building myself up and making myself into the strong person that I am today.
The true story of a young gay man who was hanged for the murder of his mother.Sidney Harry Fox was the illegitimate son of a railway signalman. He and his mother Rosaline were a devoted couple. Sidney was a forger and a fraudster and a pathological liar who in the course of his life went to prison six times, while she was a Red Cross nurse who was kept by men. Sidney was also a handsome and seductive rent boy with well-placed clients, including three members of the House of Lords, senior army officers, a Justice of the Peace, and a suspected spy who enjoyed being flogged by guardsman of the Household Cavalry. Sidney had long supported his mother on his earnings from prostitution. At the age of twenty-one, Sidney became embroiled with a notorious jewel thief and possible male lover, and later with a married Australian woman who conspired with him to defraud her father, a wealthy merchant. He was later suspected of trying to murder her, by gassing her while she slept in their flat in Southsea after she left him everything in her will. But by the end of the 1920s, he and his ailing mother had fallen on hard times. With nothing but their combined wits and the clothes they stood up in, they set off on a remarkable odyssey around England, staying in grand hotels and leaving without paying their bills. But it was the mysterious and unsolved death of Rosaline Fox which catapulted them from obscurity into the headlines. In October 1929, they checked in to Room 66 of the Metropole Hotel, Margate, where they stayed seven days. On the night of the 23rd, the eve of the Wall Street Crash, a fire broke out in his mother's bedroom and she was found dead. A death certificate was issued giving the cause as shock and suffocation, and she was buried in the tiny Norfolk hamlet where she was born. There she lay for ten days until it was discovered that Sidney had insured her life from accident, and stood to gain £3000 by her death. Her body was exhumed, and an autopsy performed. What the famous pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury claimed to find led to one of the most unusual and gripping trials in British criminal history. Set in the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties, and reading in part like the plot of a Hitchcock thriller, this is the first full and authoritative account of this amazing case, packed with a wealth of newly sourced material. It explores the strange relationship between Rosaline Fox and her son, and also asks the questions - was he guilty, and did he deserve to hang? And what exactly was Sidney Fox's crime?

Noteworthy Nature around Horsham town includes information about natural history sightings at locations in or near to Horsham, West Sussex. The author has made nature notes over many years and has extracted details from her observations to enable her to write this book. She hopes that readers will become enthusiastic about nature and progress to observe the nature around their own gardens and beyond. This book tells of local places where the author has seen birds, flowers, insects, fauna and fungi. In her own garden she has encountered some interesting wildlife. In a local Nature Reserve, that she has visited often and regularly over a number of years, she describes how sometimes a bird not usually seen at this reserve might visit fleetingly. This can be a source of new knowledge and excitement. There are though, plenty of resident birds, flowers and fungi to be seen at the reserve throughout the year yielding much to learn about. Another chapter describes a different wetland area, other natural history, and a new wildlife garden. She relates how she has seen unexpected caterpillars and insects amongst the many herbal and other plants in the Museum garden. The author explains how vital Horsham's Green Spaces are not only for the people, but also for wildlife, as there is much to be found there. These places are important also as a 'Corridor' for wildlife to continue to access more territory and connect to other wildlife habitats. The final chapter is about the wilding successes after twenty years of re-wilding at the Knepp estate, and shows how natural and diverse habitats have evolved and that rare wildlife has begun to settle and breed there. The book provides some further information about local places good to visit. At the end of the book there are a small selection of the author's paintings and sketches of wildlife.

Poemisations is a collection of the poetry produced by Dave Cook after his retirement, born from an unusual and somewhat irreverent approach to poetry and a desire to produce something a bit different. The book is divided into three sections. First "A Sort of Poetry" is a miscellaneous selection of what you might call 'normal' poetry with a fair selection of conventional and unconventional forms. Second "Science, Romance and Stuff" includes poems that fuse science and romance quite naturally together. Third "The Life and Times of Felix the Helix" chronicles the adventures of an opinionated and complex but amiable snail in poetry. The driving force behind this poetry is to celebrate creativity in the language of emotion and science and of the diverse experiences of Dave's life. Expect astrophysics, chemical elements, ukuleles and sewage treatment; don't expect metaphor, classical mythology and the Bard.
The poems in this book are a collection of experiences and reflection, based on my own life and that of others, the poems are written purely heartfelt, to express the faith, hope, comfort and wisdom, to help other people in similar situations and conflicts, to let them know that they are not on their own, there is help out there, as an individual, they are as special and as unique as the next person, in their own individual way, you are unique, you are special, you are loved.
Humberfield is a quiet village, most people go about their day to day business and getting along with lives. But some residents have secrets, revenge on their minds and a need to set things right in their lives, no matter the cost to others... But sometimes, people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like Melyssa Woodman, she is the woman who has everything, a new boyfriend, lovely job, expensive flat and looking forward to a bright future. Her best friends have gathered on a huge yacht for a weekend of fun and frolics. But there is something else in the water, a gigantic primeval sea creature intent on crashing the party. With the situation becoming more desperate, Melyssa and her friends must try their hardest to survive the night and the aquatic monster. In this collection, there are eight other tales of obsession and injustice, including: The factory worker who has to spend the night searching through a warehouse of fridge freezers to find a terrifying secret inside one of them. And more... From the mind of storyteller Kingsley Pilgrim, 'Humberfield' is a fast paced read. Intriguing and full of suspense and twists The tales are dark, but not horror, not sci- fi, not supernatural.
This book is about a journey of the soul, pilgrim meals, blisters, injury, and other, often very odd, occurrences on the Camino de Santiago across Northern Spain, which I hope you find informative, funny, and motivational. At a push, you could use the book to prop up a wobbly table! So, why do it? Well, it had become mentally and spiritually important for me, so I decided to do it because at the start I was 54 and I wanted to see if I could still do something out of the ordinary, to have an adventure, do something unusual that would test my mental and physical robustness. Could I go on day after day for five weeks? It isn't crossing the Gobi Desert on a pogo stick or sailing the Pacific in a yogurt pot, or indeed going up Everest, but it would still be an adventure, and perhaps that's what I craved deep inside. So, tell us Andrew, what can we expect to read about in your book? Here's a sneaky peak.Disclosing that I was once mistaken for Clint Eastwood. It really happened. Honestly! Just look at my picture and the magic happens. Would I lie to you?Bunk allocation on the basis of grey hair, apocalyptic chickens, feral children, hip Augustinian sisters, an undiscovered Shakespearian work, the migration habits of the 100km pilgrim, pilgrim cheating, and the discovery of a new astronomical measure. You can also read about how I was humbled by the messages and commemorative items left by people all along the way, and the single-minded and often painful determination of many others when they were clearly struggling. Reflecting upon all this I am thankful for my continued mental and physical robustness.
Holly Raider returns to Mist Lake Spirit School for her second year. When Holly and her eagle spirit, Freedom, discover a secret map, they can't wait to go exploring to find all eight rainbow stones. The question is, where could they be?

Fearlessly whistleblowing, shining a spotlight on the Police and the embedded rotten culture of dishonesty, wanton misogyny, statistical fabrication and evidence corruption. The author, an ex Manchester police officer has chosen to highlight the Greater Manchester Police, said to have "lost its moral compass" by an ex Detective Superintendent and is "Rotten to its Core" by a leading Kings Council. This book is a contextual hard hitting, factual expose of alleged police leadership, with a continual backdrop of corruption, evidence fabrication, lies and training failures during a lengthy period of 'service' of seven naively selected Chief Constables of Greater Manchester Police. All successively 'defending the indefensible' in their own style but growing to mammoth proportions, and yet still unrecognized by choice at Government levels. The accepted status quo amongst Chief Constables and Senior Officers continued to promote the lies, fabrication of statistics and evidence. All whilst wallowing in the cesspit of corruption, built over many years with a blasé acceptance of being untouchable and if at all investigated internally by similar perpetrators. The National Media whilst dutifully reporting recent popular prosecutions of lowly Constables at the 'pointed end' for a wide variety of hitherto ignored and accepted criminal practices does not recognize the historical basis. The fact that the current higher ranks, proclaiming disgust, were once lowly constables indulging in what was always accepted practices and now hidden from the public gaze with an air of recent 'successes'.... Short and very selective memories, comes to mind.

In recent decades we've seen how non-financial risks such as operational, cyber, model, conduct, climate change and many others have grown exponentially both in their size and complexity. We've also seen how devastating unexpected losses can be for a business; they're a CEO's and CFO's worst nightmare. It's a frequently overlooked fact that an unexpected financial loss must have previously existed as an unquantified and unreported exposure to non-financial risk. It follows that if the threat of unexpected losses is to be minimized accountants and risk managers must refocus their methods and systems onto the quantification and accounting for non-financial risks. Risk Accounting explains, with worked examples, how this can be done. Risk Accounting transforms color-coded (traffic light) risk assessments into aggregatable and comparable cross-enterprise risk diagnostics and, through accounting for the financial impacts inherent in quantified non-financial risks, backward-looking accounting profit is upgraded to forward-looking sustainability as the primary accounting measure of corporate performance.
On holiday in Australia, Bingham and Lina come across a stranded motorist, his car hung partway up a tree, the result of avoiding a kangaroo. Their act of kindness takes them to Yulara, the staging post for the sacred rock, Uluru, where they meet Nellie Doolan, an Aboriginal of mixed race, and, eventually, her father. While there, they are told that Helen Lewis, who runs the local Aboriginal art gallery, has gone missing. Arriving in Alice Springs, they visit a similar gallery where the owner, Marjory Fink, has also disappeared. Talking with the locals, particularly the woman's son, Henry, and her former lover, Ben Evans, they find little cause for concern. Bingham, however, takes the view that coincidences are for Russian novels and he begins asking questions that leads to an investigation by him and Lina that takes them back and forth along the Stuart Highway, visiting the roadhouses as they go. Their search is marked throughout by an awareness of the strange and startling Aboriginal culture which leads Lina, alone in the region of the sacred rock, along the Pathways of the Dreaming and a simple truth. This is the sixth in the Bingham series of novels and the first in which he and his wife, Lina, are both involved in an investigation from the very beginning.
