"Explore the folklore of the trickster, villain, and rescuer known as Baba Yaga in a new light. "With Becoming Baba Yaga, Kris Spisak presents a robust work of scholarship. Baba Yaga is a wily shapeshifter, nearly impossible to pin down-but Spisak miraculously transforms alongside her, ever keeping up." -from the foreword by GennaRose Nethercott, bestselling author of Thistlefoot When darkness, fear, and instability inundate our daily lives, folktale figures like Baba Yaga speak to the dichotomy of our existence-the hope and the horror, the magic and the mundane. At once an old hag and an enchantress, a demon and wish granter, a feminist and nothing more than a fairytale, Baba Yaga is an endlessly complex folktale character. Becoming Baba Yaga provides an in-depth look at the Baba Yaga mythos and history through Slavic folklore. Filled with historical and cultural context, analyses, and the stories themselves that add depth to the conversation. A comprehensive resource for anyone hoping to learn more about this ambiguous character and how her multifaceted presence still ripples through the present day, Becoming Baba Yaga is as thoughtful as it is illuminating. Spisak explores Baba Yaga's connection to nature as an Earth goddess and as an herbalist. She also delves into the Shadow Self and Baba Yaga's aspect as a trickster and places her in a modern context as not merely a witch of the woods but also as an archetype and force for finding your own path. Becoming Baba Yaga shares how she is both a force for good as much as evil and a feminist before her time"--
A fun beginner's guide to reading the symbols found in tea leaves! The ancient practice of tasseomancy, or tea leaf reading, originated in ancient China and became popularized throughout Europe by the Romani, who were renowned for their fortune-telling skills, and eventually became a widespread practice of divination around the world. It is one of the easiest forms of divination to learn--all it takes is tea leaves, some hot water, and a creative mind! Tea leaf reading is a form of fortune-telling that uses the symbols and images left in a cup by the tea leaves after the liquid is gone. Those images--much like the shapes we see in cloud formations--can be interpreted by the tea leaf reader. It is a special and intimate form of divination since the questioner must hold the cup in their hands and drink from it. It allows for the innermost aura of the questioner to enter into the warmly held cup of tea, and for the cup itself to have close contact with the boundaries of the questioner's body. This easy-to-use guide will teach you all the basics of getting started with this simple form of fortune casting: How to properly prepare a cup of tea How to interpret different surfaces of the interior of the cup The meanings of over 500 common symbols and images Common astrological and tarot-related symbols How to modify the practice using coffee grounds instead of tea This A-to-Z guide will help you discover the meaning(s) of almost any shape you find at the bottom of a tea cup, from anvils and anteaters to yachts and the zodiac signs.
Simple and accessible wisdom from His Holiness the Dalai Lama on how to use compassionate anger for social transformationIn the real world, exploitation exists. In the real world, there is a huge and unjust gap between rich and poor. The question, from a Buddhist perspective, is how should we deal with inequality and social injustice? His Holiness the Dalai Lama teaches that it is wrong for a spiritual person to remain indifferent; we must struggle to solve these problems. These problems are brought to our consciousness because they anger us, and this little book teaches us how to deal with that anger. There are two types of anger. One type arises out of compassion and is useful and must be encouraged. The other type arises out of jealousy and envy and results in hatred, ill will, and harm. Here you will learn the Buddhist path to compassionate anger--a motivating force that can transform the negative into the positive and change the world.
J.W. Dunne (1866-1949) was an accomplished English aeronautical engineer and a designer of Britian's early military aircraft. His An Experiment with Time, first published in 1927, sparked a great deal of scientific interest in--and controversy about--his new model of multidimensional time.A series of strange, troubling precognitive dreams (including a vision of the then future catastrophic eruption of Mt. Pelee on the island of Martininque in 1902) led Dunne to re-evaluate the meaning and significance of dreams. Could dreams be a blend of memories of past and future events? What was most upsetting about his dreams was that they contradicted the accepted model of time as a series of events flowing only one way: into the future. What if time wasn't like that at all?All of this prompted Dunne to think about time in an entirely new way. To do this, Dunne made, as he put it, an extremely cautious investigation in a rather novel direction. He wanted to outline a provable way of accounting for multiple dimensions and precognition, that is, seeing events before they happen. The result was a challenging scientific theory of the Infinite Regress, in which time, consciousness, and the universe are seen as serial, existing in four dimensions.Astonishingly, Dunne's proposed model of time accounts for many of life's mysteries: the nature and purpose of dreams, how prophecy works, the immortality of the soul, and the existence of the all-seeing general observer, the Witness behind consciousness (what is now commonly called the Higher Self). Here in print again is the book English playwright and novelist J.B. Priestley called one of the most fascinating, most curious, and perhaps the most important books of this age.
"The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is a mix of Taoist and Confucianist philosophies that has evolved over many centuries and may be the oldest book in existence. Its main philosophy is that nothing is static and everything changes over time, so our task is to adjust to the ebb and flow of changing circumstances. The I Ching can help us: make decisions; manage sensitive relationships; tap into our creative insight and intuitive power. The I Ching can be extremely complex, filled with poetry and philosophy. In I Ching, Plain & Simple, Kim Farnell has made the divination system as modern, straightforward, and user-friendly as possible--pick it up and put it to use quickly and easily, without any fuss or confusion. It is the ultimate guide to the I Ching."--

This new thought manifesto challenges readers to follow Jesus dictum that his followers should be the light of the world and offers a path for those interested in living a deep and authentic life outside of the strictures of traditional religious categories. It is, in essence, how to be spiritual without being religious. Martella-Whitsett encourages readers to embark on a journey of discovery and embrace a spiritual practice in which readers connect with their inner light and realize their oneness with God. Divine Audacity is in three parts: Part One looks at just what "divine light" is and how it is both audacious and normal to claim it for ourselves. Part Two outlines 12 spiritual powers we all have and can develop and use on a daily basis. Part Three, How to be the Light of the World, Moment by Moment is filled with illustrations of how common human circumstances can be enriched, transformed, and improved by consciously shining the light of our spiritual powers.
Simple and accessible wisdom from His Holiness the Dalai Lama on how we stay in the moment in the midst of the demands and stresses of everyday life.Be Here includes discussions of the Buddhist concepts of attachment, emptiness, compassion, love, and resentment and how our sense of the past and the future affect our ability to be in the present. Many Buddhist practices and meditations focus on "being in the present moment." But what does that really mean? What does it mean to be here now?Attachment. Emptiness. Compassion. You will hear the Dalai Lama present these three words again and again in this book of wisdom designed to move us toward the goal of "being here." He speaks of attachment--to things, to people, to memory, to feelings of anger and resentment, to future goals. Being attached means we are not here now; we are living through wherever our attachment takes us.Does emptiness mean we let go of everything? Even the present thoughts in our minds? How does understanding emptiness help us to be here now? The Dalai Lama is clear: if we are not educated about past history and if we have no sense of the future, then how can be possibly have a "present"?When we are here, we can practice compassion in the present moment and focus on social justice now. When we are here, we are no longer attached to our past, no longer stressed about the future, no longer tethered to suffering. Being here means we find happiness, peace, and the fullness of life.

Originally published by Delacorte, Mind-Reach is the book that led to the U. S. Army's psychic spy program and the subsequent prominence of remote viewing. The protocols that physicists Targ and Puthoff developed at the Stanford Research Institute are still in use today and have proven again and again in laboratory settings that psychic ability is universal.Targ is the author of three recent books with New World Library: Limitless Mind, The Heart of the Mind, and Miracles of Mind.Mind-Reach is the eleventh title in Hampton Roads' Studies in Consciousness series.
Is God dead? Jim Marion says that what has really died is our myth of God, our worn-out notion of the deity in the sky, separate from us, who intervenes in our lives only when petitioned strenuously. God still exists, but we need to update our interpretation of God's nature. The mythic sky God was never real, says Marion. It was only a concept of God, now outdated. The real God is in the human heart, within the world, operating as the engine of evolution. God grows us from within into ever higher levels of awareness. In a bold revisioning of contemporary spirituality, Marion, author of the acclaimed Putting on the Mind of Christ, shows us how to expand consciousness and follow the genuine path of Jesus and the world's mystics into greater inner development.
Professionals in modern psychology, behavioral medicine, and psychoneuroimmunology are exploring ways in which we can "mentally" influence our own bodies through hypnosis, imagery, visualization, attention, intention, and other forms of self-regulation--for fostering physical and psychological health and well-being.Is it possible for us to use such techniques to influence others, even at a distance, for purposes of healing? Is it possible for us to influence the images, thoughts, behaviors, and physiological reactions of other persons--separated by distance--without conventional sensory means of interaction? Can these abilities extend to animals and even to cells (e.g., human red blood cells)? Might these abilities be involved in the efficacy of distant, mental, or spiritual healing and intercessory prayer? Might these influences even extend to events distant in time--even "backwards in time?" Do these influences have major implications for our scientific theories, our human identity, the interconnections between ourselves and nature, and our relationships with others?Careful laboratory work--described in detail in this book--suggests that the answer to all these questions is a resounding "Yes!"A personal introduction and 12 detailed chapters describe the evidence that support these important claims. The book also describes the factors that make such distant mental influences more or less likely, so that anyone might use these distant influence skills more effectively and consistently for their own benefit and for the benefit of others.
Upton Sinclair is primarily known as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Jungle, Oil, and Dragon's Teeth, and as a fiery advocate of social justice and reform. Few know, however, of Sinclair's deep interest in, and connection to, psychic research.Sinclair's own wife, Mary Craig Kimbrough, claimed to have "mind reading" or telepathic abilities, and asked Sinclair to help her better understand these abilities. He devised a fascinating series of 300 tests that incontrovertibly proved the reality of telepathy while revealing the vast, untold powers of the mind.In one room, Sinclair would make a drawing and place it into a sealed envelope, while in another, Mary would "tune in," retrieve the image, and make her own copy. Or she would record a telepathic message sent from someone far away. Her accuracy rate was astonishing, leaving no room for random chance as an explanation, as they continued to collect scientific data over three years. In Mental Radio, Sinclair describes remarkable experiments, comparing telepathy to radio broadcasting, with one brain sending out a "vibration" and another picking it up. The results convinced Sinclair that telepathy is real, that it is unaffected by distance, that it can be cultivated, trained and--most importantly--can be verified and studied scientifically. For the first time in many years, here is the complete text of Mental Radio, including Mary Craig Kimbrough's well-tested instructions on how to learn the "art of conscious mind-reading." Here is the classic book that impressed Albert Einstein who, in his preface to Mental Radio, praises Sinclair for being a conscientious observer and writer and for his good faith and dependability in reporting paranormal research. William McDougall, known as the "Dean of American Psychology" at the time, was so inspired by Sinclairs' work that he established the parapsychology department at Duke University, which went on to become, for a time, the country's premier paranormal research institution.
