Solving murders isn't part of Devin Cleary's job description. As a security guard at Lincoln Court, a small boutique shopping mall in Urbana, Illinois, he has busted shoplifters, prevented the homeless from making the mall their home, and even rousted a few bathroom dope-smokers. When the mall becomes the site of multiple murders, Cleary is caught up in a web of intrigue that may involve a contractor's ambitions for redeveloping Lincoln Court into a megamall. He is positioned to sniff out clues that the police miss. By the world's standards, Devin Cleary is a loser. He's a college dropout. His lawyer wife left him for a colleague in her law firm. He has spent the last fifteen years in a minimum-wage, dead-end job that barely keeps him afloat. With no college degree, virtually no marketable skills, and the mall on the brink of closing for lack of business, Cleary wonders if he faces a future of sleeping outdoors in cardboard boxes and rummaging in dumpsters for meals. The only hope for Lincoln Court's survival lies with that contractor's plans, which the owners of the mall oppose, and on support for them, if elected, of a candidate for governor who sets up campaign headquarters there--until those murders cast a pall over that hope. As he tries to solve them, Cleary finds himself increasingly at risk. He survives encounters with a mobster and his former mother-in-law, a knockout punch, frenzied Black Friday bargain hunters, a shooting spree, painful self-discovery, and, after unraveling a tangled skein of means, motive, and opportunity, a face-to-face encounter with the murderer. More than a mystery, "Murder Happens" is about a man out to prove, if only to himself, that his life has value in ways that the prevailing standards of the world don't take into account.
The Da Vinci Code launched many questions about Mary Magdalene. Even more salacious accusations have been made concerning her relationship with Jesus over the centuries. What is the Truth? The Lost Diary of Mary Magdalene gathers the facts along with what has been discovered recently in archaeological digs in Magdala and Capernaum. This book reconstructs who this woman of mystery was and what role she played in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Take this journey with her from her demon-possession, to the day she saw Jesus rise from the dead, all the way to her and her husband's death at the hands of Nero. The Truth can be found, the gaps can be filled. We can read the emotions as she would have written them. As the last page is read, the reader will tearfully appreciate Jesus and Mary Magdalene in a way never fathomed.
Diary of 66 is one woman's triumph over tragedy, and also a warning about the often-deadly consequences of corruption, in all of its shapes and forms. A young Romanian rock music journalist leaves home on the night of October 30, 2015, to go to a Goodbye to Gravity concert. She wants to write a review about the gig, to help promote the band, which is considered Romania's rising star on the local metal scene. Rock music has a troubling history of repression in the ex-communist country, and she wants to bring her contribution to dismantling the prejudice that surrounds it. She never gets to write the piece and the band doesn't finish the show either. A violent fire erupts in the Colectiv Club during the concert, trapping the audience inside. Over 180 people are severely injured and, in the days and months following the fire, 65 people lose their lives. Alexandra could have been number 66, but she survives against all odds. Diary of 66 is her memoir about the night of the fire and everything that came after it: her fight against death in the catastrophically ill-equipped hospitals in Romania, that lied about their incompetence and about the presence of dangerous multidrug resistant germs to protect the corrupted Government, her struggle to get appropriate care after she's discharged with open wounds and abandoned by the medical system, her journey towards recovery, and her life as a survivor of a national tragedy that made international headlines.
In ancient Greece and across the Mediterranean, kingdoms strive for dominance. The great powers of Carthage and Egypt look on with avarice as the might of the Greeks is spent warring between themselves, oblivious to external dangers. Year in and year out, the people suffer at the hands of their rulers and the famine and pestilence that comes with conflict. The great rulers of the day are themselves helpless to end this cycle of destruction. While life on the battlefield is cheap, the slave trade flourishes through the years of interminable battle and death. Kings and queens pray to the gods and seek wisdom from the oracles, but the gods, it seems, prefer combat to diplomacy. At Olympia, the peace of the temple precinct is an island of calm in a sea of turmoil. Here on this sacred soil grows the seed of a better future, yet even here there lurks danger and deceit as the forces of destruction reach into the sanctuary of the gods. For this seed to thrive, it will take more than prayers and goodwill. Yet often hope springs from the most unlikely sources. There is one amongst the Greeks who sees light where others only perceive darkness. One who sees that there is another way to settle conflict - with honor and courage. One who will set aflame a torch that will burn for thousands of years, down through the ages. In an epoch of chaos and strife, a new force for peace is born.

Convention on the definition of aggression signed on 3 July 1933, established the borders of modern Romania. As in the case of its neighbors, Czechoslovakia and Poland, revisionist currents in Europe during the interwar period threatened Romania's newly established frontiers, one of the most serious threats being posed by the Soviet Union which sought to regain possession of Bessarabia, a Romanian territory that had been occupied by Russia from 1812-1918. This book is a comprehensive account of the efforts of Romanian diplomacy during the interwar period to protect Bessarabia from the Soviet threat and the diplomatic and military events that led to the forcible occupation of the Romanian territories of Bessarabia and Northern Bucovina by the Soviet Union in the summer of 1940. The author not only provides an important account of Romanian diplomacy during this period, but also sheds light on the foreign policies of the Western powers, the Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany in this area of Europe. It is a key work on Romanian foreign policy during the interwar period and a necessary addition to any research library.
Johanna is one of the daughters of a migrant cobbler from the eastern backwoods of Pomerania, born in the German Empire of the 1880s. Aching for a life of accomplishment and respect, she resolves to escape her dad's fate of early death, the stigma of his mixed Slavic-German heritage, and the poverty that followed him. A headstrong girl, she refuses to be exploited as a housemaid for a wealthy family--the only choice for girls like her. She loses her job when the master of the house tries to rape her. With nothing to lose, she accepts a job as the concession shop operator with the railroad. Her assignment is to travel with the construction crew across northern Germany. On the first day of work, she sets up shop (and home) in an empty passenger railcar and meets Hendrik, a Dutchman, and the construction superintendent. Head over heels, they marry when Johanna becomes pregnant. It doesn't take long before the first babies arrive and continue arriving: within three years, Johanna delivers five children, and the caboose becomes crowded. A railroad inspector drops in unexpectedly and bans the children from the construction site, so Johanna moves into the nearest town with the children. Johanna, now married, hides her mixed Slavic ethnicity behind Hendrik's Dutch last name, while massive, anti-Polish measures make life in the Empire difficult for Slavic people. When Germany joins Austria-Hungary in a new war--too close to Hendrik's home country--he wants to return home to neutral Holland. When Germany sinks American vessels, he's had enough and packs up his family in 1917 to move back home. The couple buys a farm with their savings in Hendrik's hometown. Then Johanna\u2019s real test of loyalty starts when the Nazis invade.
A dark chapter in recent human history The first part of this novel follows the adventures of three young friends during a memorable last mountain climbing trip to a remote area of a country under the control of a ruthless authoritarian regime. During their journey, the young men have to cope with bear encounters, venomous adders, colorful locals, storms, dangerous climbs, flooded caves, and other challenges, as the main purpose of their trip is gradually revealed. A second story, intertwined with the first one, focuses on a brilliant young pianist and his ill-fated quest for freedom. Urban life, in the dreary capital where the young men regularly reside, is the focus of the second part of the novel, when the friends begin to go their own separate ways and come to terms with their very different future prospects. The challenges of life in the capital, which include run-ins with feral dog packs and the secret police, are very different than those faced in the mountains, but not less dangerous. Ultimately, this is a book about friendship, the noble, irreverent and indomitable aspects of the human condition, as well as a dark chapter in recent human history, and the various ways in which different people cope with difficult and unfair conditions. It is an often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking exploration of the absurdities of life under an increasingly erratic dictatorship which is gradually losing its grip on the people it could never fully control.
