But their world is fragile, and soon tragedy strikes. The doctor must decide if love lost is reason enough to damn all of mankind, or if hope and salvation have many faces. He meets other survivors, some good, some not, and soon feels that his path, his decisions, are no longer his own to make. Finally, when faced with mounting injuries, both physical and mental, does he have the strength needed in a world where resources are scarce, life is cheap, and more than 60 years have already passed him by?
