Pair bonding, or long-term adult romantic relationship, was advantageous in ensuring offspring survival and adult protection in the evolutionary environment, thus humans have evolved with strong mating and pair bonding motivations (Belsky, 1999; Fraley, Brumbaugh & Marks, 2005; Fraley & Shaver, 2000). Because successes and failures in meeting adaptive goals is correlated with emotional and psychological health (Nesse, 2016; Plutchik, 2003), decreased or thwarted mating opportunity should theoretically impact wellbeing. Sex ratio refers to the number of males relative to females in a given population and significantly influences mating opportunity. When sex ratio is skewed, the oversupplied sex experiences a dearth in mating opportunity (Guttengang & Secord, 1983). The minimal research that has been conducted in this area suggests that population sex ratio and mating opportunity influence wellbeing (Tucker & Mitchel-Kernan, 1989) yet more research is necessary to gain a better understanding of the psychological impact of sex ratio.

In the United States, the rate of drug shortages has significantly increased over the last 10-15 years. The Food and Drug Administration passed the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act in 2012, which requires pharmaceutical manufacturers to notify the administration of any changes to drug product production with the hope to prevent or mitigate any potential drug shortages. Various factors as to why drug shortages occur have been studied, including manufacturing difficulties, shortages of raw materials, voluntary recalls, natural disasters, supply and demand issues,business and economic issues, and regulatory issues.

Health literacy is a well-studied concept that has a large literature base. Yet, little is known about health literacy and people diagnosed with mental illnesses, and even less health literacy research speaks to people diagnosed with mental illness. I used a framework and approach of lived experience of psychiatric diagnosis and psychiatric survivor research to conceptualize and inform the study. It explores health literacy with people diagnosed with mental and physical health diagnoses using a small quantitative survey, focus groups, and an individual interview. The findings suggest that health literacy is a dynamic and complex construct that interacts with the individual across the layers of an ecological model and over time. Relational, trust-based practice with a primary care provider is viewed as supporting health literacy. In addition, trauma-informed and culturally responsive care also can strengthen health literacy. In contrast, participants describe the emergency department as a place within the healthcare system where they commonly encounter barriers to health literacy. Other barriers to health literacy include coercion, lack of trust, lack of credibility, lack of informed consent, and iatrogenic experiences with the healthcare system. More research is needed to understand the complexity of health literacy and how it interacts with diverse people and structural elements of the healthcare system.

The Catholic Church is one of the oldest and most widespread religious organizations in the world. Most people are familiar with the Church in some way, but very few know what it is like to be a sexual or gender minority while being raised in a religion as conservative and set in its ways as the Catholic Church. We know that queer people do not stop existing just because they are religious, but not much is known about the sense-making that goes into performing both queer and Catholic identities. Narratives are particularly important tools of both sense-making and performance for individuals, and so these narratives were examined to better understand their experiences

The purpose of this study was to explore the artifacts, norms, values, and underlying assumptions within the organizational culture of a startup athletic apparel company. Utilizing Edgar Schein's organizational culture framework, a case study was performed to examine the processes, strategies, and values used by company founders and leaders to create and sustain an organizational culture. Podcast interviews were used to collect datafrom company founders and departmental leaders. Document analysis of website data allowed the researcher to examine company structures and processes. A survey of employees in non-leadership positions provided data organizational culture data from those participants within the organization

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a sense of my own awareness of where I stand in the complex, ongoing conversation of racial justice. I hope to convey the deeply personal reasons for embarking on this study and offer my perspective as a White mother to Black-biracial boys and partner to a Black man. Further, my perspective informs my standpoint from the margins in that I am neither fully invested in whiteness nor can I ethically appropriate blackness. I hope to illustrate how I exist in tension with a culture of whiteness and "thinking Black.

Approximately one in five college women experience college sexual violence (SV) despite decades of prevention efforts (Koss et al., 2014; Muehlenhard et al., 2017;White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault, 2017). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Basile et al., 2014) defined SV as a sexual act committed or attempted without the freely given consent of the victim or against someone who refuses or is unable to consent. Sexual violence includes both penetrative and non penetrative acts as well as non contact acts.

This thesis describes the design, manufacturing, and testing of a high voltage power supply for an electron spectrometer to be used on a small spacecraft. The challenge was reducing complexity, size, and power consumption enough to be useful for a CubeSat or a sounding rocket sub-payload.The power supply has two purposes: i) it produces DC at roughly 2000 V for a microchannel plate detector and ii) it produces exponential voltage sweeps from about +4000 V to below 5 V for an electrostatic analyzer. This power supply uses solid state relays for a charge pump and for producingvoltage sweeps with capacitive discharge. The detector power supply is software and hardware regulated to provide tunable output up to 2400 V, with voltage drift and ripple of around ±1%. The power supply is managed by an MSP430 microcontroller

Automatic ECG diagnosis algorithms are usually deep neural network classifier models which classify the ECG beats depending on the general pattern of the ECG heartbeat

Dengue fever (DF) is a vector-borne disease that has transmit alarmingly in recent decades and has now affected the populations of roughly 100 nations, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. Approximately 390 million cases of dengue fever are reported each year among people living in 128 countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Viral, host, and vector interactions result in complex spatiotemporal patterns in dengue disease. Moreover, it has been previously indicated that the dengue fever epidemic is due to several climatic, social, environmental, and biologicalfactors, and these factors vary from place to place and with time. Therefore, an accurate spatiotemporal prediction model is essential to understand the disease patterns and improve the monitoring and control of potential threats.

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how domestic violence advocates who work with physically, mentally, sexually or financially abused clients in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, described the influence of self-care in the prevention of compassion fatigue. Research question one for this study centered on what self-care techniques do domestic violence advocates describe as typically being used in the prevention of compassion fatigue. Whereas, research question two asked how domestic violence advocates use self-care to prevent compassion fatigue. The sample for this study were domestic violence advocates who worked at domestic violence organizations in theMid-Atlantic region of the United States.

Women continue to be underrepresented in computer science and technology related fields despite their significant contributions. The lack of diversity in technology related fields is problematic as it can result in the perpetuation of negative stereotypes and closed-minded,unchecked biases. As technology tools become integral to our daily lives it is essential that a diverse group of people contribute to the sociocultural environments where we participate and live. This dissertation is a phenomenological, interview-based, study designed to investigate the lived experience of women in undergraduate computer science and engineering programs. The purpose of this study was to better understand the factors that might encourage or discouragethe participation women in the major and in the field. In order to grow the number of women in technical fields it is important to first understand what attracts them to the field and what supports they find helpful or not helpful

Fear of falling (FoF) has been extensively studied in aging populations, due to the high prevalence of both falling and FoF in older adults. Research has identified a number of biological, psychological, and social/environmental factors related to the development of FoF. Research has yet to explore how FoF impacts the daily lives of caregiver and care recipient dyads along biological, psychological, and social/environmental domains.Existing literature also fails to provide clinicians, and in particular physical therapists, with considerations for the evaluation and clinical interviewing process for individuals seeking care related to FoF.

In 2013, Dr. Jeff R. Gardere, an African American psychologist, reported that Black/African Americans would seek mental health services if there were more racial- ethnic clinicians (Smith, 2015). He expressed that it could help eliminate the mistrust that Black/African Americans may feel when seeking therapy services from those not of their race.

Quantum mechanics is a very successful theory which precisely describes the behavior of microscopic particles. Although the theory provides counter-intuitive predictions, such as that an object can be at two different positions at the same time and the "spooky action at a distance" between two objects, it describes the microscopic world with unprecedental precision. These counter-intuitive quantum behaviors of microscopic particles explainphenomena across disparate scales, from the microscopic scale such as interactions between sub-atomic particles, the atomic spectrum, motion of electrons in solids, and chemical reactions, to macroscopic scale such as behavior of superfluids and superconductors, and even the evolution of stars. So far, no example of conflicts between experiment and theory is known, and the validity of the theory is so broad that one would expect that the quantumtheory can be applied to the macroscopic world, for example, a macroscopic massive object such as a soccer ball can in principle be at two positions at the same time.
